The "Mag in, bolt forward, hammer down, dust cover shut" is called 'TRANSPORT MODE.' It's a good method for storage of any rifle you need in a "ready" condition but you are not under direct (in your hands) control of.

I store it in whatever condition it's in when I'm done firing.

I USED to store it with the bolt locked back and a mag in the well in order to get it into action quickly if I got a bump in a night.

But then I went to the range and got a spate of failures to ignite primers. I was worried about something happening to the hammer spring. Especially as mine is a kitgun with parts from anywhere. Since I didn't want to go and try to change the mainspring- installing it took HALF the time I spent assembling my gun- I went back to storing it with the bolt closed, and started teachng myself to pull the charger back with the side of my left hand.

It was disappointing. The bolt lock back feature, and the way it could be stored safely and yet be ready for action at the push of a button, was what drew me to the AR for a home defense gun in the first place.

I may yet buy a new spring and go back to the other way. Especally since I haven't had a repeat of the failure to ignite primers that I had since.

I wouldnt want to store an AR bolt back with a loaded mag in it.  I dont know if some of you have noticed, but it only takes a slight bump on the buttplate to release the bolt on some guns.

Now I know why this thread is 3 pages long, but I am insufficiently geeky to add to the wave.

Mag in, round chambered, safety on, dust cover closed, hung on my gunrack over my bed.

Grab, flick, 30 rounds of screaming death for any thug who is stupid enough to break in
