For most people no matter how much money they have, they will always want more.  Unless you are content you can not be 'rich'.

Also, if you mean monetary richness then your assests have to be equal or more than you debts.

Anyone who thinks that an annual household income of $100,000 is rich, is a fool.

Tell that to a man working the fields in Afganistan.

Piccolo:  Great thread.  I look forward to reading many pages of opinions and wisdom.

As for my answer, it is $55M cash.  Don't ask why that number, cause I don't know.
But that has been my definition of rich, in my dreams, for many years.

To me, being rich is when you know that you can walk away from your job NOW, never make another dime of income, and live in the style and level of comfort that you are accustomed to, for life, and that includes sufficient reserves to handle any foreseeable or unforeseeable emergency, be it medical or a natural disaster, whatever.    You can coast the rest of the way through life in comfort.   THAT's what RICH is.

In California or the NY metro area, $100K/yr gets you into the middle class, maybe. Don't expect a house of your own.

I am rich in family and life itself.  Financially, however, rich is when you have enough money that it earns money enough for you to live off of.

I referred to the guy driving a new Mercedes as being a rich bastard when he cut me off.

He leased it.  $700+/mo.  Seems like a lot of money to me for stylin' & profilin'.

The dude rollin' in the Toyota had it paid for.

def. Rich....just a concept & perception.

My grandmother was a nanny for "rich" people who lived in the "better" part of the town were I grew up.  I recall when I was about 8yrs old, I was talking with grandma about the rich people she worked for with huge houses, big new cars ect.......'her wise reply was, they are so far in debt they'll NEVER live long enough to pay their way out.  Don't buy anything if you have to use credit.'  I've tried to follow that advice as best as I could & I've done well.

My definition of money rich is an annual household gross income of >$100,000

I live in a very low cost of living state. >$100,000 will get you a few more square feet on your house but you still have to watch what you spend and budget so I wouldn't consider that rich.

YOU are never rich. Only those that seem to have more than you and seem to work less than you do are "rich".  There is always "more", no matter what you have.

Being content is the key.  Politicians, advertisers, and sellers of just about anything all depend on you not being content.
