I don't understand these stupid fucking hover board things. They have wheels, it's not fucking hovering.

I saw some dumbass fall off one at a street corner while waiting to cross. I couldn't help but laugh and then thought, what if he had fallen into the street and was hit by a car?

Yes.  It was one of the "Careers in Focus" in the December issue of Better Vans and Gardens.

If this is not proof that the young men of Western civilization need war, I don't know what is.  It is damn obvious that there are a lot of boys/young men that have a desperate need to prove themselves and in our NERF society, don't know how or have few outlets to do it.  There is no real gateway to manhood moments left for them, so they invent them.  War may well have been that last true "proving ground" for western boys to become men and not feel like they had anything to prove.

Instead of blowing their budget on rental cars, I think that money would have been better spent on a couple of extra camera angles up on the buildings.  When it comes time to fund his next project, people are going to remember that.

i'm not the one posting videos of myself doing ridiculously unsafe things in order to convince people that i'm not afraid to die.  i think pretty much any man worthy of the name looks at a cliff, and says to himself "i could climb that."  challenge is good, and so is the refusal to let fear make decisions for you.  IMO, that was a major historical function of warfare to young men--the development of a masculine identity and social respectability.  but we live in a different culture now.  war is wrong, remember?  it's bad.  despite all the claims of "supporting the troops," society is profoundly uncomfortable with the idea that there are people who choose to participate in a pastime that entails killing and dying (because killing is wrong).

by comparison, the dude whose youtube channel allows vicarious participation in death-defying (but non-killing) activities faces no such disapprobation.  he doesn't make anyone uncomfortable, and he gets to be a celebrity at the club.  it's one thing to climb a cliff to see if you can overcome the mental and physical challenge.  to my mind, hoverboarding at a precipice or somersaulting down an incline 40 stories up is an entirely different matter.

it seems to me that those activities are entirely driven by running towards fear for the sake of vanity, rather than overcoming fear for the sake of an ideal.  to my mind, the infantryman in a firefight is courageous, while the youtube showoff is trying to prove (to others and to himself) that he's just as fearless and manly as the soldier.

maybe you think otherwise, and that's fine.

I am OK with some heights if in a harness and rope. Less so after doing a Wiley Coyote impression on a botched 60' scorching abseil to impress a first date.

Put me unroped on a high hotel balcony, or even in that blasted St. Louis arch, and my butt goes numb. The pic where he's standing against the building is one that just gives me the involuntary sympathetic nervous system response.
