We do 25 years and out @ 65% of your base, or 30 years @ 70%,

65-70% of BASE? Is this correct?

If so, what you are saying is that if you make $100K with OT , you still only get retirement pay for $72K. That's pretty fucked up.

Is this set up as a last year worked kind of thing? So that you will recieve 60% of base from your last year? What about night differential?

Sounds like a raw deal to me. The most you can get at retirement is $46K.

This is how New York is set up. We are set up with 50% @25yrs(looking for 20yrs). It is configured for a bsae year, 10% over for the next one, and then 3 consecutive years for a total of 5 years. The 3 years are averaged out including ALL pay (OT, night diff, bonus, etc.) We have guys who have their 3 consecutives at around $150K. This means that at retirement, they will get $75K for the rest of their lives. Myself, I will see at least $50K.

No it's your base only.  And it is an average of I believe your last year.

No age restriction!  I'll be 47 @ 25 years of service credit (military purchase included)

But as a Sergeant with my max at 83,000 and 9 years left, my base should be over 100,000 if we average 3 % a year.  Not counting another promotion.

We have no Shift differential.

I'm pretty happy with it, plus my deferred Comp (457 Plan) that I contribute 10 % of my pay to, I should do alright after retirement.

Retire, Move out of NJ, and life will be good.

Thanks for the info. Do you know of any documented cases of inmates getting the OC away from CO's? That is going to be managements big argument against it.
Been there and done that with the oc..although we didn't have to do any dexterity tests after getting sprayed..

Yes, it was wrestled away in one case I know of.   No particular details but it was not effective on the deputies.   I dont think it actually got them.   We carry a very small container it's 1.8oz of Sabre Red.   The OC exposure we get is basically to show you can fight through it.   Spray your warden once so he can see that it's not a big deal

You just have to explain to mgmt that even if they get it away it's not a big deal.   OC doesnt disable as much as distract, it gives you something else to think about.    A crook might be worried he's got a bigger ass whoopin coming whereas a CO knows he has to subdue the crook.

Sabre is nasty stuff. Worse than 1st defense in my opinion.

Well, that works out nice as long as you get raises (we are ALWAYS several years without current contract), and if you get promotions. I am sure you have lots of guys who won't get promoted. I myself will never be, and was passed over several times due to "I don't play well with others syndrome" ie:Kiss Ass. (not saying you kissed ass, just in my dept. that is the way it works)

My plan is also to take the money and run the hell away from NY as fast as I can.

I have been on CERT for 8 years. I taught behavior management for a while but that gets old as you must know. I am one of the few weapons qualified people and they use you quite often for perimeter posts and dangerous person transport. We are 20 and out with 50 percent of our 3 highest years, no age restriction so I have 8 years left and will be 40yrs old. I am with you as I will be leaving the state soon after retirement to maximize my money and work very little.

Former Texas CO, worked Ad Seg, we carried/wore OC, Baton, Stab Vests, Cuffs, Radios just to work the cell blocks. Hospital Escorts carried same gear plus add SW Mod 65 .357 with Rem Golden Sabres.

Perimeter Security team, 870P with 00 buck, AR 15 and .357 for each post.

Learned a lot from running convicts, apply it to working Juveniles for County Probation Department now.
