Ok I was just curious. Thinking maybe without a buffer it would travel too far to the rear and maybe the handle hit the receiver. The first 2 on the back of the bolt looks messed up. Does it look like it may have been hitting something in the rear of the action? Like I say I have one and had it apart before, but I dont remember the ins and outs of it.

Well I think I found the source of this problem. That piece is non-existent on this gun. How it that retained?

How old is this model 11? I have a pre model 11 (1905-1911) and it did not came with the buffer as it was added later upon adoption of the model 11 name. All model 11s SHOULD have it though.

The wear on the 2 is probably from the hammer hitting it. You would expect to see damage to the cocking handle and the receiver cracked in the back of the slot as the OPs gun has first, before damage to the rear of the bolt and hump.

I also hope to get the barrel cleaned and prepped tomorrow, super fine steel wool and PB blaster really do well.

Did you ever check the length on your springs?

You can get the fiber cushion here:

Order a spare.   Does your gun have the rivet hole?

Not yet, I will today after work.

Got an email back from Remington:

"We no longer house any parts for this model. For your convenience, we have included a link below to a list of establishments that may offer parts or services for your older Remington firearm. You can access this list in the Support - Parts division of our site. "

Doesn't even come close to answering my question about the mettalurgy

I have a 6 digit receiver I could cut off a chunk of if you wanted to use it for the tig process. It's a later gun for sure so I can't be sure the metal will be the same but I'd bet it's close. It's the remains of a parts gun, I have no attachment to it.

It seems obvious, but maybe not.
Reblue before you replace the fiber cushion.

I don't think I'll be rebluing it at all, just a very thorough cleaning.
