The design was created here as a "covert symbol" for the crew. It was so damn perfect we had to protect it. The rest is history.

Just think, we could have done the same with all the other bolts/sights that have showed up since if it was about greed. We wanted something special for all of us and it's so perfect, that people steal it all the time. The BFL belongs to all of us, as a group. Our concern is only to protect it from being misused or abused. We have given a lot of projects our blessing with licensing to create variations, regional logos, etc. If it's an arfcom thing, we usually are behind it. (Except on lowers! Sore subject.)

The BFL (Bolt Face Logo) is a graphic. By definition, the icon on the top left of this webpage that you are viewing, is indeed an image. The logo itself is a graphical depiction of an object.

A depiction that has been made famous by this very website.

Why has every imitator chosen THAT very graphic to be used as their representation of the AR15 (with the exact same areas shaded and outlined in the same exact simplistic manner)? Why not the front A2 sight, or the trigger guard, or the pivot pin? Because the Bolt Face LOGO has become a famous graphic.....just like the famous check mark that is often imitated. How could Nike copyright a commonly used marking designation made by everyday writing instruments?

ETA: I notice a lot of the posted hotlinks now yield a, "We're sorry! The product you are looking for is no longer available." message. Someone has been busy.

on one of my former sites some of the artists would find their work blatantly copied. the copy-cat would try to "justify" it by claiming that they photoshopped it a little so now it's their own work and that the original artist has no rights to it.

from what i've been told though, the claim that "photoshopping it makes it OK" doesn't hold up well under scrutiny.
