Here is a story on Captain Jennifer Harris. Capt. Harris was the pilot of the downed CH-46.

Lets not forget that when iraq was fighting iran we gave iraq a lotta stuff that they are probably using against our kids right now.Our hands are not clean in this mess , when we say they had WMD we probably know this for a fact because we gave them to iraq during the Iraq and Iran war.

"a lotta stuff"?    Please, be specific.  What did we give Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war that they are currently using against U.S. forces?  Or is this just some tired tidbit from DU that you're regurgitating here?

They allways had MANPADS... But most of it was 1st-gen (SA-7 'Grail')

Evidence would indicate they now have 14s and 16s...

All of the helos brought down this year seem to have been shot down by ground fire not SAMs...

I remember when the Apache was first being deployed, it was supposed to be invulnerable to rounds up to 14.5mm and able to 'resist' 23mm.  I wonder what ever happened to that?

I always wondered how something made of thin aluminium sheet metal could take such abuse.

All the gear boxes and driveshafts, hoses, wires, electronics.....

I flew Cobras for the Army and we learned the hard way, how vulnerable those were.

Certain PARTS of the '64 are able to survive 12.7mm (50cal) fire and possibly a 23mm hit...

Most of the aircraft, however, is COMPOSITE or thin sheet aluminum...

It is by NO MEANS an A-10/'flying tank' design...

<---- Army helicopter mechanic (airframe)....

Yep...

We gave them some ground equipment, and IIRC we may have given them some FIXED-INSTALLATION SAM SYSTEMS (not MANPADS, but fixed-site heavy SAMs - think 'what PATRIOT replaced)...

All of it was destroyed in 1991...

However, Saddam bought a shitload of weapons on the black market between 1991 and 2003 - Iraq was a virtual ammo dump...

They have ALLWAYS had SA-7 pattern weapons from the beginning (they used them against us in ODS)... The SA-7, however, is easily jammed/decoyed...

The SA-14, SA-18 and SA-16 are not so easily 'confused'...

That is probably what we are facing at this point...

The only US built SAM's Iran has in their inventory, are a handful of 1970's phase II Hawk Missiles ( Many of which, were sold to them Ironically, by the Israeli's back during the Reagan era.) The Iranian hawk's are mounted on big 8 wheeled trucks. The Iranian's also messed around with trying to convert some of the Hawk's to AAM's

I'll guarantee you. What hit that CH-47, was not a Hawk.

Most likely as many others have stated, either an SA-7 or an SA-14.

They waited until they had a rear aspect shot, which suggests either they're real well disciplined, or were using the older SA-7.

Former 46 mech here. That looked like a SA7 missile. I didn't see any flares from the anti-missile systems, so I'm guessing this is a new type of threat to them. I do believe if the crew had seen the launch and the pilots had taken evasive action and used countermeasures this would have been different.

Soviet, period...

The French don't have an indigenous MANPADS - they use British or US designs....

The Syrians (and every other ME country) DO NOT HAVE THE TECH TO MAKE THEIR OWN SAMS...

The only nation besides the US, Britain and Russia that makes it's own MANPADS is China, IIRC...

Does the 47 have the 'Disco Ball' (like the Blackhawk)?

While I don't like to admit it, I believe we certainly had some involvement in the buildup of Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war. This was certainly the type of behavior that the CIA was known for at the time. No direct proof of Stinger missile shipments, but unfortunately I would not have put it past the CIA to do so during the 80's......we did provide them with bombs and many other weapons, and left over ordnance is what is being used to make the IED's that are giving us so much trouble today, maybe not our bombs, but we certainly did provide them some weaponry.........

Does tha Sea Knight have any EW gear? I didnt see any flares though they did bank prior to being hit indicating that they might have known something was coming at them.

Oh we provided both sides with the occasional weapons shipment, but we never sold them Stinger's. Unlike Afghanistan, there was never any practical battlefield need for a MANPAD, on either side of the Iran/Iraq war.

For the most part, we were quite happy to sit back and watch Iran and Iraq stage a replay of Verdun, with just about that level of technology and strategic planning.

Why the hell would we have given the Iraqis Stingers?  The Army pitched a fit about the Stingers diverted from filling NATO requirements to go to the muj starting in, like, '86.  There's no way in hell the Iraqis would have gotten any before the muj.  By that time the Iranian AF was in hiding, out of spares, munitions and competent pilots.

The idea of us giving the Iraqis Stingers is absurd.  A highly sensitive and scarce proprietary weapons system that we absolutely needed in Europe to defend tank formations from Russky strike aircraft and Hinds given to a barely friendly regime that didn't have to address the threat Stingers were designed for? C'mon.

even supposing we gave any manpads to Iraq (which I think is false), they have a limited shelf life--batteries die, fuel degrades, etc. None of which they would have had spares for. Why do you suppose we weren't facing our own Stingers in Afghanistan? They've all gone stale.

I think it is clear that these are new, and are coming either directly or indirectly from Iran. Either way, it will end poorly for them.

Don't think it'd deter much.  A missile team for a full Chinook or Sea Knight is a pretty good trade for the bad guys.  If the gunships cut loose and kill some random hajis along with the shooters, even better.
