News sites DO suck at their jobs, but that doesn't mean that it's terribly difficult to find yourself in a few minutes time.

Go HERE

Download the pdf.

Search "Vehicle safety". There's quite a bit in there about all the ways they want to regulate your vehicles going forward, so you'll have to hit next quite a bit... Or just skip to p. 404 and look at section c:

(c) ADVANCED DRUNK AND IMPAIRED DRIVING PREVENTION
TECHNOLOGY SAFETY STANDARD.—Subject to subsection (e) and not
later than 3 years after the date of enactment of this Act, the
Secretary shall issue a final rule prescribing a Federal motor vehicle
safety standard under section 30111 of title 49, United States
Code, that requires passenger motor vehicles manufactured after
the effective date of that standard to be equipped with advanced
drunk and impaired driving prevention technology.

Specifically, that's: TITLE IV—HIGHWAY AND MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY, Subtitle B—Vehicle Safety, Sec. 24220. Advanced impaired driving technology, section c.

Also, see p. 403, (b) 1. A. :

(b) DEFINITIONS.—In this section:
(1) ADVANCED DRUNK AND IMPAIRED DRIVING PREVENTION
TECHNOLOGY.—The term ‘‘advanced drunk and impaired driving
prevention technology’’ means a system that—
(A) can—
(i) passively monitor the performance of a driver
of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that
driver may be impaired; and
(ii) prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if an
impairment is detected;
(B) can—
(i) passively and accurately detect whether the
blood alcohol concentration of a driver of a motor
vehicle is equal to or greater than the blood alcohol
concentration described in section 163(a) of title 23,
United States Code; and
(ii) prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if a
blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit is
detected; or
(C) is a combination of systems described in subparagraphs (A) and (B).

Kill switches have been a thing for used cars for a while now. I think NV finally passed a law about them. They tended to get used in the cheapo ‘Buy Here, Pay Here’ places. Someone misses a payment and they brick their car. It works for folks with shaky credit who miss payments and it is cheaper than the repo man.

Lol, NOW look at what "your" car is going to look like.

I think you'd be surprised how many would-be-conservatives are alienated by the "but pot needles" BS.  We should be resisting any form of government control over what we drink or smoke. Punish the act, not pre-crime.  If you cause an accident causing injury, punish accordingly but assuming someone is going to cause an accident because they are at .08 BAC is the height of idiocy.

by 2026, vehicles sold in the US will be required to automatically and silently record various metrics of driver performance, and then make a decision, absent any human oversight, whether the owner will be allowed to use their own vehicle. Even worse, the measure goes on to require that the system be "open" to remote access by "authorized" third parties at any time.

... cars already do all this stuff. And as far as a remote kill switch? All that requires is that the snitchfotainment/comms system has a way to talk to the engine control module... or to anything else that can talk to the ecm.

I'm surprised you didn't know this, OP.

Dataminers now buy a crazy amount of data from the auto manufacturers harvested out of cars. Heck, the things know your weight (they have to, controls the airbag system) and some cars that monitor you with cameras to see if you're falling asleep have cameras facing you already.

Watching people figure this out is just like watching people find out a few years back how bad modern social media is.

Cue the ignorant suicidal "but I have nothing to hide" posts by people who don't realize that "law" and "regulation" can be changed or "interpreted" in order to attack anyone those who run the involved institutions want to.

Tyrannical rulers were bound to push for this type of control over transportation at some point.  We can thank irresponsible shit-bags who have caused avoidable tragedies on the road for giving them the crisis to not let go to waste

I'm looking directly at you DUI, no insurance, no license and generally reckless mother fuckers on the road.

It's also hilarious that anyone would think they won't make people add kill switches to older cars.  Some of you live in la la land.

That would be kinda hard to do with a vehicle that doesn't have a commercial ECU.

Looks like track days are about to become a thing of the past.

And insurance rates will be tied to "driver performance".

Ultimately, if your "social credit" score dips, they will just brick your car.

I still remember watching in the bay when the chrysler factory scan tools were hooked up to one of the cab-forward sedans (think late 90s to early mid 00s) and the thing could control the throttle, brakes, and ... iirc? steering? I believe it had electronic steering assist.  All you needed was access to the computer system.

Well, now virtually every car made is on some wireless network or the other.

I move to abolish the US government and all its laws. Start over with nothing but the constitution (maybe a couple minor amendments).

The federal government is at the point where the infection is in all its cells. It's necrotic.

Also, anyone who believes in what was good at the time of our initial secession from the crown cannot be in any direct union with states like cali, nyc, etc - yes, I am aware that the states are not uniformly shot in the head across all their geograpy. I refer to the state governments themselves.

If there were a new union founded, they should not be a part of it.

Also, the state constitutions would need to be cleaned up and tightened. The states had constitutions before the federal union came to be and are where the more important things take place legally. That the federal government is so important is wrong and not how it should be.

They catch you with the automated license plate reader, send the cops after you, and seize the vehicle.
