It's a felony-grade assault for a student to hit a teacher (or any staff- janitors, etc), it definitely should be the same the other way around.

I'm not sure about the laws in Ohio, but the laws in your own State qualify this as a felony, aggravated battery:

(720 ILCS 5/12-3.05) (was 720 ILCS 5/12-4)
   Sec. 12-3.05. Aggravated battery.

(b) Offense based on injury to a child or intellectually disabled person. A person who is at least 18 years of age commits aggravated battery when, in committing a battery, he or she knowingly and without legal justification by any means:

or disfigurement to any child under the age of 13 years, or to any severely or profoundly intellectually disabled person; or
       (2) causes bodily harm or disability or disfigurement

Hitting a cop isn't a guaranteed felony most places - I don't teachers are different.  Ask Extorris how many people the NY DA's charged with felony assault of a cop................

The bold part applies to this case, not what you highlighted in red.  In addition, battery in a public place can also be considered a felony.    
I really don't have a problem with this teacher (for lack of better word) be charged with a felony.

Firing requires a process to be followed - and that takes time.  Time for which she will be paid to do nothing because she would be removed from a classroom.  Resigning ends the paycheck.  Former employer can still tell any prospective employer she resigned while under investigation.  Hopefully a criminal conviction would have her credentials revoked thus preventing future employment in the field.
