I picked up my 09 F150 4x4 5.4 V8 Lariat for 26k at 63k miles 8 months ago and have been very happy without outside of the things I broke from off roading as much as I do. The truck is my off road project anyways so it doesn't bother me to dump money into it in order to fix it as I intend fully on owning it until parts run out which won't be for a few decades I imagine.

For $20K you can make a down payment on a 1998 Tacoma with 225,000 miles.

Fords with the six liter are to be avoided like the plague.  6.4 is not much better.

Seriously. Lay your hand on the workbench and hit it with a three pound hammer as hard as you can swing it.  It will hurt less and cost less to fix.

They are slightly more maintenance intensive than a helicopter.

If I had to buy a truck for $20k right now, I'd get a nice F250 crew cab 4x4 with the 7.3 Diesel.

I'd spend the rest of the money on upgrades and making it ride/run like new.

I'd rather have an older truck with widely available and relatively cheap parts vs a new one that I have to trust the dealership to work on while it's under warranty and then be saddled with high priced dealer-only parts afterward.

Why not keep $5K for yourself and drop 5 down on a new truck with 0% financing ?
Dealers are over stocked with 2015's and have huge rebates on them, you can fetch a $40K truck for mid to high 20's.

A $20K truck these days has seen a lot of road and you'll be close to or out of warranty.
If it breaks you pay. Lots, whether you are making payments on the truck or not.

Maybe in Canada.

Show me a new 40k truck in the mid-high 20s with 0%.
