[HankHill] Yeuup. [/HankHill] Have that on Laser Disc. Awesome through a kick-ass home theater system. +1 for Frampton too. |

If you like live metal try Thin Lizzy's Life live double album. Very coherent metal and well mixed. They did a lot better songs than "The boys are back in town".

I'll give you a new take on it: Having a 5.1 audio system has given me a new appreciation for live music. I have several live DVDs that are outstanding.
• Led Zeppelin's 2003 live DVD (with the desert on the cover) is absolutely amazing. You MUST hear this if you like Zep. "How the West was Won" was pretty sweet too. • Pearl Jam's "Touring Band" is great - and the way they mixed it, the crowd noise is coming from the speakers behind you, giving you the effect of being in the front row. Fantastic. • "Concert for George" had its moments - Billy Preston's version of "My Sweet Lord" is absolutely incredible. • Stevie Ray Vaughan "Live at the el Mocambo" will make you sweat just watching him. He worked so hard on stage. • Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "High Grass Dogs" is a good one to get lost in. I know there are more... As for live recordings on CD... Tesla's "Five Man Acoustic Jam" still gets playing time on my player. Love those guys. I have one or two live Pearl Jam albums and they're great. Allman Brothers live at the Fillmore is outstanding Aretha Franklin Live at the Fillmore West is great, as are some of the James Brown recordings I've heard. I'm still trying to find a live recording that Dave Matthews band did way back in the early 90s. They wove their songs in seamlessly with some great old tunes, including some David Bowie. It was great. Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison is great stuff. No way can I pick one album. And to think I was going to just post a smart@$$ answer like "Throwing Copper" |
About the only "live" album I own is Type O Negative's "Origin Of The Feces". I generally hate live albums but this one is the exception.

I actually keep a disc of "Slim Whitman- Live from Las Vegas!" in my BOB for when the martians attack.
ACK! ACK ACK!! |

Ted Nugent - "Double Live Gonzo". Led Zeppelin - " Song Remains The Same". The Ramones - "Alive" (up to the 3rd page and I'm kind'a surprised no one mentioned it). Lou Reed - "Rock 'N' Roll Animal". Thin Lizzy - "Live and Dangerous" |
I'll give another vote to Pantera 101Proof.
Funny how I got my moniker huh. |
+1 My first choice would be "Seconds Out"! Without a doubt one of my top five albums of all time. A great recording with lots of great songs. This was the first Genesis concert I saw but not the last. "Made in Japan" is also a great album. |
Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, Survival Of The Fittest/Live.
AB |
Molly Hatchet-Double Trouble Live
I wonder if anyboy here has ever heard of STATUS QUO Status quo-Live AC/DC - Live at Donnington-DVD Moutain-Climbing-Live |
That is in my top five as well.
I think I had that album years ago, in my skate rat days, probably not one of my favorites, but a solid record by an underrated group. |

Paul: The live version of "Dance on a Volcano/Los Endos" is, without a doubt, the BEST live rendition I can think of.
The only reason I picked Made in Japan over Seconds Out was the difference of technology. The clarity and quality of music in M-I-J, done years earlier than S-O is outstanding. And I used to be a real Genesis junkie-I NEVER saw them in concert when it wasn't absolutely kick ass. I used to take friends of mine to their concerts and they'd be slack-jawed at the sound and spectacle on stage. Genesis was one of the richer bands in the late 70s thru the 80s and they used to rent their light system out to other bands. But Made in Japan-WHEW! What that band did with little technology. |

It's my favorite simply because it was my first punk album as a skater. Some of their studio stuff I didn't like, but the live record was pretty cool. I don't have much live stuff either. |

Newly released Allman Brothers live at the Atlanta International Pop Festival ain't bad. Recorded July 3rd and 5th, 1970 and was about six months before the Fillmore recordings.
The Fillmore shows have been re-issued after being re-recorded and mastered from the origional tapes. They did edit some of the songs so they don't sound quite the same but well worth the bucks. |
+1 for Social D. Live at the Roxy. Going to see them play this Sunday...can't wait
Although it is roughly mixed with outtakes and not actually "live" in front of an audience, "Fleetwood Mac in Chicago" is pretty good.
Absolutely!!! I was in Long Beach for all 3 shows on that tour. I need to find my old ticket stubs again. . . |
The Who Live At Leeds was pretty good.Almost sounds like a studio album.Maybe it was.Lots of good music in this catagory. Thanks for the memories.

Iron Maiden - Live After Death

I forgot about that one. One of my old roommates had it on DVD |

Dire Straits -Alchemy
Live at the BBC may be better, but I've only heard a few cuts. I beleive that of the versions on that album that are also included on Alchemy, the Live at the BBC versions are better. I also don't care for live albums generally for all the reasons listed in other posts. Mark Knopfler Might not be the "best" guitar player in the world, but I enjoy the fact that there's a melody there, not just technical flash. I saw Keith Urban on TV - the CMA concert show, and was impressed. Looked him up on AMG, found out Knopfler and Dire Straits were a major influence. |
