Here is the thing, a truly Covert/Discreet bag should not only have no relation to the shooting sports(coyote tan, PALS webing, velcro) it also should not be something that is of value to the average walk by thief. The street thief looking for something to pawn for a quick buck is MORE interested in your guitar/Baseball gear/etc then he is your gun. A ratty backpack or gym bag draws no attention from anyone, unless you look like you would never work out. View Quote Last time I was in the pawn shop here a guy was trying to pawn a guitar (nothing fancy)-they offered him 5.00. ETA-I never leave mine alone to be stolen-It goes where I go.I just like being incognito. |

My brother uses a Dewalt soft sided tool bag. Zips shut and is waaaaay stronger than any gun case (short of a hard Pelican) I've seen. Being how he's in construction, a tool bag is secret squirrel in his truck.

There was a rifle case that had an oval or circular compartment at one end that really broke up the outline. I think it also had the bungee zig-zag compression cords on it too. It looked almost/kind of like a regular backpack if a bit long. The color schemes were burgundy and blue/gray. I guess it could have been construed as a snowboard or skateboard bag, but was just a little too skinny.
I think they're out of business though. It was the best one I've ever seen. Quoted:

View Quote The 5.11 COVRT It looks pretty close to the out of business bag I mentioned above. The Trojan definitely looks even less "gun like", OTOH for the reasons posted above, I'd worry about anything that looks like sports or musical. Even if thieves wouldn't actually get good money at a pawn shop... well thieves don't have to be smart. Also, a sports bag would look out of place in a lot of locations if you ever had to carry further than from your home to your car, so IMO the COVRT is more covert than the Trojan. http://www.511tactical.com/All-Products/Bags-Backpacks/COVRT/COVRT-M4.html Being 5.11 brand, it'll probably be made by every cop on the planet, but petty thieves and uptight anti-gun blissninnys will probably not notice. Put some rock climbing/camping/mountain-biker patches on it, dirty it up a bit, and maybe bungee a nasty looking towel/rag to the side and a funky old water bottle to it and it'll probably be about as "COVRT" as it gets. Maybe put some of these in there if someone tries to peek. The Brief-Safe... |

Just revived the Trojan case yesterday. I like it my rifle fits in well and does not print at all.
I like the two compartments one has molle and the other has Velcro. I do not understand why they placed the velcro straps on the molle side, but I just placed a molle holster and mag holders over on the molle side. I figure it makes more sense than having loose mags on the other side. Ill post up some pictures later when I am home. |

This thread brought back some good memories of the guy that got on our elevator when we were checking into a hotel the night before a carbine class.......................... Well do tell..... Nothing that great really, but the look on the guy's face when he got on the elevator and realized there were three guys in there with rifles was pretty funny. I think we told him were in town for target shooting or something. And all three guys are members here... Also IIRC, the vehicle we were using to drive to the course was loaded to the gills. Five carbines, three pistols, and about 2,500 rounds of 5.56 and 2,000 rounds of various pistoil calibers amongst the three of us. Really not all that much when you consider things, but the short convo about "imagine if a podunk fudd police officer knew what we had in here with us, rolling down the highway" comes up each time, and so do the smiles across our faces. ------------------------------------- Back when open carry wasn't a big deal in California (circa 1993), I moved my Colt A2, 1911 and my Mossberg 500 Intimidator (buttstock and heatshield attached thankyouverymuch) from my apartment to the car one day for an all-day range trip to the BLM truck trails in Ramona. I lived on the third floor, and my load was heavy so I took the elevator. Everything was cased, except the shotgun. Got on the elevator and hit "B" for the parking garage. Well, waddya know...it stops at "2". The doors open, and theres this guy that walks on nonchalantly. THEN he finally looks up to see me, and my stuff. I don't know if he was heading down, because he just kinda stood there staring. The doors closed, and he rode the elevator with me to the ground floor. Short elevator rides are usually pretty quiet as we all know, but the silence was deafening...more so for him than me, I was perfectly relaxed. Doors open at the parking garage, I gather my stuff and step off. As I exit the elevator and readjust my stuff, he's still in there looking at his feet. The doors close and off he goes to whatever fucking floor, I've no clue. I went to the range, and had a decent day, I'm sure. |

It's a nice-looking case. HOWEVER, $200 for a rifle case for which you have to buy the shoulder strap separately?
|
|
Do you just want people to think you're going to band practice when you leave your house, or do you want someone that broke into your car to skip over it while they grab your stereo? I think there is a big difference.
Tools, musical instruments and electronics are all happily stolen out of your car. Gym bags, tennis rackets, and other beat up looking things that may contain dirty gym shorts are not on the top of the list of stuff that someone wants to steal. If you have a trunk or a pickup with a lockable box, I would go guitar case. If you have something with windows all around and no trunk I would go for something more like a baseball bag. |
