That manager is an idiot. He should have just called the cops instead of stepping in front of the car.

Then, the manager stood behind the suspect's car and tried to stop them from leaving, Over a dime or less worth of soda? I get the indignance, but the mental math ain't strong in that manager, and will probably be what gets him fired. There is a principle involved. at what point do you say, "Enough!" I hear ya, but I'm not damn fool enough to stand in front (or behind) a vehicle and risk eating through a straw the rest of my days for soda. |

Stealing is stealing. I see little shits do this all the time, and just usually give them the stink eye and a "really?"

Never understood the free water thing, once they put the fountain drinks in the lobby. May as well just put the cups next to the fountains, build the price into the food. Or put the fountain back behind the counter and go full refill nazi.
As for the soda felon, lol. Have fun in the big house. "What you in for?" |

Keep thinking of the vid from Brazil where the guy's filling a cup and then pouring the cup into a 5 gallon Homer Bucket.
Over and over. |

Not worth getting hurt over. These kind of threads are always interesting for what they illustrate about moral absolutism versus moral relativism. For the record, I agree with you - the manager should never have put himself into a potentially dangerous situation trying to stop someone from stealing some soda. However... The question is, at what point DO things become worth standing up and fighting for? Or is there one? I just ask that rhetorically, to the board in general, and not you in particular. |

It's too bad a cop wasn't handy. The result is better when a vehicle tries to run over a cop. There's never one handy when you need them.

Manger might find himself in hot water for getting involved. Most big companies seriously frown upon their employees getting into it with shoplifters.

Was a time (I think) when drinking water was required to be provided (then I think upon request) - but that's why you always got a glass of water at a sit down restaurant. I suppose it was to prevent choking or what not.
Then the looters found you could get a free water/cup - and of course scam the system by substituting a premium product. Both the cups and soda (and machines/maintenance/hoses) cost $$ to use - so although this is a small time theft, just multiply the damages across the nation. It's like paying for a Coke and taking a Beer, but worse as you didn't pay anything to begin with. Just the entitled being entitled - keeping costs higher for us all, unless we join in on the scam. You may be entitled to drinking water with a meal, but you don't get free soda. Chasing them was the dumbest thing though. |

I saw this happen a few years ago at a McDonalds. Wheeeee everything's free. Consumption yes, Production no. This is why Bernie Sanders.
When I was growing up, I use to see kids from military families play in other peoples yards, use others swing sets etc.. They got used to this living on base I suppose. |

Whats the threshold for "felony theft"? $1.25???
Or was it the aggravated circumstances the pushed it into felony territory? Stupid hill to die on, IMO. Start doing what they used to do back in the day and charge for the cup. |
