Yes. Aunt of mine died in one. I remember visitingwhen I was little, they had a hospital wing with about 40 of them in use.
Gave me nightmares for years. ETA Google says that there are about 10 people in the US still living in one. |

When I was a kid this was every parents fear come summertime. i even knew a few kids who had to use one for awhile. Seeing kids who had this disease was pretty normal when I was a kid. A cousin of mine survived it.

We put a trailer hitch and wheels on one so mom & dad could drag little Timmy around behind the Gold Wing.
It was magnificent. |

I know what it is. Never seen one in person, and I doubt many were still in common use by the time I was born. Intubation was far more common by then.

With Rotary's effort and now with a grant from Bill Gates Polio cases in the world are less than 100 whit almost half of those in Pakistan. Hopefully within 5 years iron lungs will not be needed anymore. . |

Sure, and I still remember some of the iron lung jokes we told as kids. All of us kids in our family who had been born by then had polio. My Sis and I had it the worst in the family (but not as bad as many did), but aren't doing too bad now later in life.

Yes, and I have met three people, just a little older than I, who have lingering effects of polio. I am 58.

This thread made me sad. I had a friend when I was a kid that had to spend a lot of time in the IL, one day he never made it out.
RIP Tommy, hadn't thought about you in a while but I never forgot. |

We lived in terror of Poliomyelitis during my early life. There was a dedicated ward in our small town hospital. The machine made an eerie ominous sound

I remember the fund raising videos to complete the fight against polio This was in the early sixties under my mother's feet as she ironed clothes while watching soap operas and smoked Kent cigarettes True fact: there were once ironing boards with built in ashtrays |

My grandfather brother stayed in one of those for 3 or 4 years.
He died two months ago at 86. Never walked after his 4th birthday. He invented the first set of hand petals to drive his truck and many say the first electric wheelchair out of a GE electrac lawn mower. |
