I just got my first wheel gun...a S&W 640 Pro Series with front and rear night sights and fluted barrel. Just like this one:

I don't dislike them per se, but I don't own any. I have shot quite a few of them, and generally speaking I don't shoot as well with them as with an automatic. IIRC there were some police statistics from back in the day that showed that cops typically shot better with automatics, too, which is one of the contributing factors (along with capacity) for the transition from wheel guns to automatics by police departments.
The revolvers that have tempted me are: S&W 640 series and its variants S&W 329 woods gun Colt Python (caught the bug as a kid when my uncle managed the local range and a few State Troopers let me shoot theirs) Webley Mk VI |

Quoted: They have outlived their usefulness. People can buy them for the unique, cool factor, but I don't understand using them for carry or defense. View Quote Because there are many other reasons to own a firearm other than for defense. How about hunting and target shooting? I'll take a revolver big game hunting over an auto everyday of the week. |

I don't dislike them, and I own a couple, but I view them more as historical relics. Like bolt-action combat rifles, their time has passed, though they're neat to handle, shoot, and preserve.

I looked at my original post and decided to amend it.
I like revolvers as pieces of engineering and pieces of history. The basic parts of the DA/SA revolver haven't changed much since 1900? or so. Single action revolvers, much longer. Once my finances are in order I'm hoping to get a Peacemaker clone and a three inch J-Frame. An old one not a new one. I think my wife would like me to get a heavy barreled .38 K Frame. I made the permanent switch away from revolvers when I bought a LW Commander. Same weight as my Rossi M677, easier to carry, more ammo, easier to reload and most important much easier to shoot fast. So, I tend to look at revolvers as old classic cars. Nice to get out on the weekend but not for an everyday driver. |
If I were able to spend most of my time in the forest as I would like to, I'd be carrying a .44 guide gun and Redhawk or Mod29!
I have revolvers, one that I inherited (never shot it) and a cheap revolver in 22lr. I wouldn't turn down a revolver but I don't have a need for one.

I find it amusing how many "gun guys" hate guns...........I love 'em all, auto-loaders, revolvers, single shots........
I have nothing against revolvers, except I can't hit a damn thing with them. Ever. Even from 5 feet. They just feel all wonky in my hand. So I have to stick to my autos.

I've had some great revolvers over the years, unfortunately it was before my epiphany that I'll never sell another of my guns.
My nickel Model 57 S&W .41mag with 8 3/8" magnaported barrel and pachmeyer combat grips was a great gun. Accurate as hell too. Killed more than one mule deer with that pistol. Had a Ruger Redhawk in .44 mag which was very nice. Matched my Ruger .44 mag Deerstalker carbine. Always wanted a .50 Smith and a .454 Casul....but never bought either one. Now, I believe, the only revolver of note that I own is a .45LC Ruger Vaquero that's unfired. I got it in a deal with a Marlin 30-30 for $300.00 from a friend who bought them for cowboy action shooting...but never found the time. I missed the Norinco Trench Gun he had. |

View Quote ^^^ I prefer semis for almost everything and tend to shoot them better, personally, but I still love and appreciate revolvers as well... and have quite a few nice ones. My very first CCW piece was a wheelgun, so I am admittedly nostalgic and biased on this question. |

I own three and even though I have tried to like them I find them less practical and less accurate than autos. Anyone else feel this way? BTW thinking about selling a couple and buying another auto View Quote I prefer a semi-auto as a practical defensive tool but would not feel unarmed with a good wheelgun and, especially shooting single-action, am as accurate if not moreso. I've got a 1957 4" S&W M19 that allows me to back up the statement "If I can see it, I can hit." I had a Schofield replica in .45 Colt that hung in my hand like it was built for me and pointed like an extra finger. Hit hard, too. Just not as practical as my Glock 19.... |

S&W and Colt revolvers are elegant compared to any auto loader. True works of mechanical art, and dang accurate to boot.
I qualified with a revolver when I was in the military, never had any problem hitting my intended target with a wheel gun since thn. In these days of scarce and expensive ammo, it is nice not losing brass and reloading for cheap shooting. 32 S&W long is now cheaper to shoot than 22lr when reloading. While not in the market for any other guns, a 3" 32 s&w long J frame popped up recently for $135. It followed me home like a hungry puppy. Super tight gun, shoots fantastic groups without beating up either my hand or my wallet. I like autos as well, make no mistake, but wheelies are an addiction. |

Never cared for them. They go in the pile with 1911s and M1 Garands labeled "obsolete."
I got rid of my 686. Too big of a gun for six rounds...takes too long to reload. I do carry a J frame in a heavy jacket pocket one or two weeks out of the year. My primary carry pistols are a G19 and 17. No retarded DA/SA, just point and shoot. Drop the mag, insert another, and let the slide go. This is 2013 gramps.
Edit: paging RustedAce. How he feels about shotguns is how I feel about revolvers. |
I very much dislike them, but I do own an airweight .38 for quick packing.
My 2nd favorite firearm (1st is a 45 stainless ruger bisley) is a SW 325PD in 45acp. Beautiful, simple, robust revolver that handles hot loads and light loads all the same. I can shoot from hip with 100% reliability. Never have to worrk about a mag spring fatigue or bullets feeding properly. I have tried several pistols over the years and NEVER found one that I liked more than one of my old wheel guns.
I like both. Also like Taurus.
guess I'm screwed. Raging Judge Mag ftw |
I would say they are elegant. I have a few and never thought I would.
If it was all about function i'd own 2 glocks and 2 ak variant rifles (or ar) and nothing else. |

I don't necessarily dislike them - I just have no desire to own one. Semi autos do almost everything a revolver can do. The only shortcoming is playing Russian roulette with a semi auto never goes very long. The main argument is reliability. But also if you go with a shrouded hammer, you can pocket carry. I'm no tier one operator, but can envision a scenario where a person is tackled before they can get to their CCW. A revolver would allow you to shoot through your jacket pocket, etc. if you couldn't get it free. That said, there are obviously plenty of downsides as well. |
Small caliber revolvers don't really do much for me. If you're gonna get a revolver you gotta be a man and get a .357 mag at minimum. I love shooting my 686 way more than my 1911. Revolvers are all about elegance and power. probably gonna get a .460 XVR in the future.

I find them harder to shoot fast and accurate...I'm no Jerry Miculek but that's what makes them my favorite thing to shoot.
Try shooting some .38 wadcutters in a .357 pistol, or .44 specials in a .44 magnum.
See if your shooting doesn't improve greatly. |

I have a Ruger GP 100 4" I bought it for hunting (mountain lions). I have no intention of carrying it for anything else. It is very accurate, and now that I am moved, I can start reloading for it

I love my Ruger GP100 in .357mag. One of the most fun and accurate handguns I have.

I dont own a harley, probably never will. Doesn't mean I wouldn't ride one. Much less claim "hate" for them. It's not the bikes fault most guys who ride them are complete douchers. The bike is still cool. |

I like them. I don't carry one very often, but I enjoy shooting them.
ETA: On the other hand, nothing makes me rage as much as morons recommending air weight .38s to brand new female shooters. |
It's nice to go the range and not have to load up a bunch of magazines nor worry about some new magazine ban.
And not having to scramble all over the place to pick up spent brass |

What's to dislike? They are very accurate and almost impossible to have a failure. I own 7 or 8 of them ranging in size from 327 Fed Mag to 454 Casull.
