For several years I have worn a standard USGI woodland boonie hat for my everyday knock around, in the woods, keep the sun off my face hat. When I saw a picture of the new MARPAT boonie, I was intrigued, because of the wider brim more, so than the digital camo. I bought an issue MARPAT woodland boonie hat off of eBay.

I have only been wearing it a few days, but I can tell you, it is a big step up from the old GI boonie. The wider brim really does a much better job of blocking the sun and glare. The interior is double lined, with a softer (cotton?) fabric in the inside top, sides, and as a sweat band around the front 1/3 of the hat. The chin strap is adjustable with a neat push to unlock nylon device that really holds an adjustment, unlike the old little leather tab in the GI hat. I am really impressed and have already retired my old GI boonie. Of course I will be putting it to easy use, but it seems to be a well thought out military hat.

"I always wore my boonie covers "cowboy" style. Can you do that with the new cover, or is the brim too big?"

I checked it out, the brim will still work OK "cowboy" style. If anything, the cord adjustment device holds it better.

FWIW, I covered the USMC EGA emblem with my Air Force Munitions badge.

I hate to do this on my third post but,

Don't let me see you walking around covering anEagle, Globe, and Anchor with an Air Farce patch.  I will let you know my true feelings about it....whenever & wherever!  Go ahead and wear my cover, and I'll take it that you're supporting the Corps, but if you want to put a patch on something go buy yourself a blue and gray "hide in the sky" hat.hFrom a Jarhead stuck in Korea

MARPAT Again! This madness has got to stop. As a former Marine, I take offense at the notion of any Marine telling an American citizen what they can and can't wear. The only people that must earn the right  to wear the Marine Corps uniform are Marines. And really, you don't earn the clothes, you earn the title. Everyone else can wear whatever they please.

Damn, what happened to other my post!  Thanks for catching me, Chris!  Always setting myself up for the easy one.

Hey, I agree with everything he says.  I, too, love the new boonie...he probably gets to wear his more than I do mine.  My post was half in jest.  You are right, he can wear whatever he wants...likewise, I can tell him what I think of what he's doing.h.gif

Jeez, All I wanted to do was to give a short review of a good hat. If anything, it was a compliment to the USMC for fielding a worthwhile hat that is better IMO than the corresponding USGI hat.

I would take the animosity a little more seriously except that in my 8 years as an Air Force officer, I was constantly being asked by US Marine officers if I could get them USAF issue flight jackets for their off duty wear. First it was CWU-36/P's, then later A-2's (the A-2 leather jackets were like gold, but I helped out a couple of Marine officers with CWU-36/P's). These Marine officers did not seem concerned about wearing another services uniform item.

edited to be a little less prickly. All the Marines I ever met were stand up guys.

That is absolute truth!  We do think we can take whatever we want from the other services, and they can't do same back.  Something about our pride in the uniform.   Anyway, I still agree that it is a great cover, much in improvement over the old buckets.  Put whatever you want on it.  It looks better with an EGA, but if you want your patch on it gofer it.  Wear away and enjoy!

Slufstuff, may I ask what you paid on ebay?  Sizes and patterns are hit and miss on Oki, but I think they're $12.  Of course I have to get back to Oki first.

And of course, they're "free" when you enlist!

Thanks Kota. I only covered the EGA out of respect for the USMC, I would not want some one to think I was trying to be a wannabe. I never wear a badge or insignia I did not earn. But the USMC boonie hat is just too darn functional not to wear!It is really the best field hat I have ever owned.

I paid $25. There are cheaper copies available, non issue, but you get what you pay for. The rip-off copies are noticeably cheaper in materials and leave off the inner lining.

As a former Marine, I don't really care if civilians wear Marpat gear or not. I can't imagine anyone actually wearing any of it in public. If I see you at the mall wearing Marpat, I will laugh at you, because you look like a tool. If you want to wear it because of its function or utility, have at it, but please, limit this use to the woods/desert/anywhere except downtown.

im split between the normal Marine MARPAT reaction and sukebe's more laid back approach. would i accost you....no, absolutely not. looking like a poser is your business. but i may politely tell you how faggoty it is to put your airforce badge on a Marine uniform item. especially when it obscures my beloved Eagle Globe and Anchor.

for what its worth, the boonie cover is not authorized for wear with civilian attire. to my knowledge the only items authorized for wear with civilian attire is the EGA tie bar, the all-weather coat without rank insignia, and the tan web belt. also the MARPAT boonie cover is not an airforce uniform item. so since you arent a Marine and its not an AF item....youre not supposed to wear it. period. and doing so is pretty much equal to wearing your cammies to the mall, drinking and walking, or any other of the myriad of disgusting things i see the AF personnel do in their uniforms at my base. i hope people point and laugh at you. i know i would.
man when those gay blue tigerstripes come out im gonna wear them all time. with EGA's pinned on YAAAAY!!!! i mean we can just mix and match uniforms right.

The Eagle Globe and Anchor is more than just a logo. I have no problem with it being worn by anyone, as long as it is done respectfully. Posers and such are a different matter, and one that isn't relivant(sp) in this situation.

The only part of your taxes that go toward the Marpat uniforms are the ones that Marines are paid with. We don't get uniform handouts. My first LES went into great detail showing the portions of my pay that were deducted for uniforms, hygeine items, and other required gear. I had to pay for my Marpat uniforms, boots, etc. with my own money.

I've got a quick non-Marpat, no-boonie question.

Around here on KAF, up in Manas, and up in K2 all the Air Force guys and gals that I saw were wearing the "pointy" covers like the Navy/Marines wear.  (I don't know what they are called, not trying to offend )They were normal 3 color desert.

When did the AF start issuing those?  Do AF guys working in garrison(i.e back in the States) wear them too, or is it part of a field only uniform?

Just FYI, there are two version of the USGI boonie hat - I have one of each.  The original one I bought has a wider brim (I think almost 3") and is made of nylon/cotton like the winter-weight BDUs.  The one I picked up later is the standard summer-weight ripstop cotton style with a 2" or 2.5" brim - the one you see most people wearing.

The brim on the first one (the winter-weight style) really looks too big, but works well to keep the sun and rain off your face.

Just my two cents on the other issue - I have no problem with people wearing Army logos (most Soldiers are less touchy about that than Marines, in fact most could probably care less), but I don't care at all for people that wear the rank - like people that pick up old field jackets at the local surplus store that still have stripes or bars on them.  Of course, for Alyssa Milano, I can make an exception:

(I believe her cousin is actually a captain in the Army and loaned her the hat)

I have all the respect in the world for former and present members of the military, and I ALWAYS have.

That being said, I'll wear whatever the fuck I want in surplus military garb (I DO remove any insignia-THAT I WILL NOT WEAR, I didn't earn it) because:

A) It's IMO the best quality hunting apparel I can get, quality and design-wise

and

B) MY FUCKING TAX DOLLARS PAID FOR IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. So I actually bought it TWICE.

I have the boonie hats in desert and woodlands MARPAT. Very good design. I've only worn them a couple of times so far. I WILL be buying both patterns in MARPAT but I'm in the process of losing some weight (finally!) and I'm waiting until I bottom out before I buy them.

I don't have the money to keep buying cheap shit hunting clothes so I buy what lasts. And the military surplus stuff LASTS.

And if the military is selling it on the open market it must be OK with THEM if I'm wearing it.

ETA: And US military is not the only thing I buy. I have Dutch, UK, Rhodesian and East German surplus clothing also. ALL of it is very well made.

I'm not really into the whole camo thing myself so I just go the khaki/tan hat route. I have only owned two boonie hats, as I just replaced  my old one that was destroyed by my friend's kids after they got a hold of it, so what do I know though. I'm fairly sure mine is a USGI hat, since I picked it up at a Surplus store, but then again, I'm no expert.
