Naturally high G tolerance does not come from higher blood pressure. It comes from fitness, muscle strength and G conditioning.. During the centrifuge training I could sit relaxed under sustained 5 G and have a normal breath and conversation. My blood pressure sitting at rest was 100/60

During high G, the force of G does not make the blood pressure 800/600 at heart level it is the straining maneuver and the heart that increases the blood pressure to 800/600. Without the straining maneuver, the blood pressure at heart level would be zero because all the blood would be in your feet. Ok a little bit of exaggeration there. Either way the blood pressure in your heart is 800/600 and the heart has to be able to handle it and still overcome the pressure and pump blood to the brain.

The AF doesn't like to talk about it but a good chunk of what is classified as GLOC is actually heart explosion, and that is in 20 and 30 year olds. Eta. In a population of extremely medically healthy people.

http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2013/07/23/air-force-fighter-pilots-signing-bonus/?test=latestnews&ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000058

"Fighter pilots were once considered such glamorous gigs that Tom Cruise played one in the hit Hollywood movie, "Top Gun." But now, three decades later, the U.S. Air Force is experiencing such a dire shortage that it's guaranteeing a $225,000 signing bonus -- $25,000 a year for nine years."

Well yes, being a Navy Fighter pilot IS glamorous. Air Force Fighter pilot, not so much apparently.
They should just merger the AF back into the Army and be done with it.

No kidding. Not sure why the USAF wanted to compete with the Navy anyway
Let the AF have nuke missiles, space and satellite stuff, and the Army Air Corp the fighters and transports.

Interesting to note that guard pilots and active pilots get the same number of hours.

Only with one, you don't pay them to NOT fly.

I got 22k per year for i think 6 or 7 years back when i signed it in the mid/late '90s.  All the fighter pilots are bailing and going to the majors....they are apparently hiring big time now.  Lots of the simulator instructors that are retired are jumping on the same bandwagon, the airlines.  I was hired at United but chose this sim job instead.  Much more relaxing.  Oh, and my son leaves for pilot training at Vance AFB this Sunday.  Three generations of Fighter Pilots!

Yes, Lt Cols, Cols, and generals fly. Generals fly with adult supervision.

Some Lt Cols and most all Cols in the USAF, do not have the phyical or mental ability to be combat effective due to age. They don't fly combat missions for the most part. They  are commanders that fly on occassion and generally speaking can not fly their way out of a wet paper bag. They self limit the Gs they pull because fr the most part, can not  handle it.  Of course there are exceptions.

It is a young man's game.

No.  "In the United States military, the rank of warrant officer (grade W-1 to CW-5) is rated as an officer above the senior-most enlisted ranks, as well as officer cadets and candidates, but below the officer grade of O-1 (NATO: OF-1). Warrant officers are highly skilled, single-track specialty officers, and while the ranks are authorized by Congress, each branch of the uniformed services selects, manages, and utilizes warrant officers in slightly different ways. For appointment to warrant officer one (W-1), a warrant is approved by the secretary of the respective service. For chief warrant officer ranks (W-2 to W-5), warrant officers are commissioned by the President of the United States and take the same oath as regular commissioned officers (O-1 to O-10)."

They are specialists and not command officers.  Army helo pilots are generally warrant officers. I ended up turning down my opportunity to commission at college (did my 4 years of ROTC but turned down an Army scholarship my junior year) and looked into being an Army pilot after college but never really pursued it like I should have.  One of my big regrets.  I had no desire to command.  I like the idea of being an 'officer' and a specialist in something without all the other hassles associated with being an officer.

Guys on here are making it sound like they are giving a $225k signing bonus to guys to sign up to be a fighter pilot... that isn't what is happening.  From what I read they are offering a $225k bonus to veteran fighter pilots who are 11 years in and get the $225 to sign for 9 more years to get to their 20.  There is no problem getting enough new pilots, there is a problem retaining the vets after 11 years...  thats how I read it at least.

Congrats to your son Bull. That is awesome.

I was at Vance, not a bad place for UPT.

Majors hiring big time? Might be a bit of an exaggeration.
Not a bit of exaggeration.  Put it this way.  We have sim IPs who have been non current for over 5 years getting interviews with the Majors.  Word is, in the hundreds of thousands over the next decade or so.  No one is staying in, the majors are absorbing every one of em!  Hell, i am even contemplating it.....but i doubt it.  I fucking hate hotels!

Which ones are hiring? There are only 3 majors left, plus JetBlue, Southwest and FedEx and UPS. The rest are RJs.

There has been a bunch of shit put out about a pilot shortage coming, but I don't see it.

Besides, don't think of it as flying or staying in hotels, think of it as bar hoping across the country by airplane.
