Question is, can you afford the AR10? Clearly the AK is cheaper, mags, and ammo. The AR10 is the better weapon but, can you afford the mags ($40+ each) and ammo (oh my).
I picked up an AR10 a while back ago only because I already had a stock pile of .308 for my M1A. If you can afford to stock up on .308s at todays prices then jump on the AR10. If your limited on funds then stick with the AK. Kind of a stupid question really.

For what do you intend to USE it?

Blasting, car and home defense - AK
Target shooting and hunting (not that an AK is too bad in this) - AR10.

Range toy and of course SHTF purposes.

AK. That way, you're covered if you're picking up lots of 7.62x39 in any SHTF.

You'll have (if you have an AR, assuming you do...) 5.56 and 7.62x39 platforms.

Yeah I've got an AR and a Sig 556.

You never know when you might have to shoot through things and .308 will definitely shoot through things

It depends on what you are trying to do, but for a general-purpose SHTF/plinking rifle on a limited budget, an AK is hard to beat.  AK's are widely available, affordable, and parts are extremely common, making logistics very simple.

If you are seriously into precision/long-range shooting or hunting, an AR10 is a better choice, chiefly because it is a .308 and is undeniably capable of a greater degree of mechanical accuracy than an AK.

There are fewer issues with mag commonality in AK's than there are with the AR10, as some AR10's are configured to run 1960's-era original AR10 mags, some are configured for modified M14 mags, and others are set up for modified FAL mags.

AK mags are very common, almost a dime a dozen, and most varieties are completely interchangable.  Additionally, if you break or lose an AK mag, you're only out a few bucks and you can easily get a replacement.  Same deal with other AK parts.

AK's are not "toy's".

If you don't have one, get one.

If I wasn't piss poor broke I'd be stockpiling that cheap surplus 5.45x39, an AK-74, spare parts kit and mags.

1080 rounds of 5.45x39 surplus can be had for about $135.00 now plus shipping but it won't last much longer.

I would buy the AK in 5.45 platform, cheapest on the market to shoot for the time being. The .308 AR10 would make for an expensive addition both to run and to purchase.

I've thought about an AK in 5.45 but how long will that ammo be around for, is it in current production by anyone? What country still uses it?

Golden Tiger is selling new production in 5.45.  It's great stuff in 7.62x39, read good reports of it in 5.45 too.  Better'n Wolf.

Same stuff buddy...

AR10 or HK91. I'll take the extra weight and better accuracy any day. I've owned several AKs and got rid off them. Aren't worth a darn if you can't hit anything.

Sounds like a personal problems I can make just fine groups at 100 yds with wolf ammo out of a WASR-10... even better groups with my yugo... so IDK what your talking about...

Not at all.  Golden Tiger is made by Vympel.

Worst AK I ever shot was some sort of Chinese POS in 7.62x39 about 7 years ago.  Sitting at a bench, it was accurate enough that I was able to hit an 8-inch pie plate every time at 100 yards.

I didn't use anything to support the rifle; I was just using my hands, and this was my first time shooting that particular rifle.  The ammo was the old steel-case Wolf.

Local shop has some WASR's for $400 and another kind that's a lot nicer looking for $500.

What's the one that is a lot nicer looking ?  The best of the foreign-made AK's are probably the Arsenal rifles, from Bulgaria.  If you find yourself a Bulgy, snatch it up; those are great AK's !

I'm pretty sure that it's an Arsenal, I"ll give them a call on Tuesday when they open back up.

How about a 7.62x39 upper for the AR AND an AR10?

You can pick up a nice Vector or Lancaster AK for around $500.  Multitudes better than any WASR, and about half the price of an Arsenal.  An extra $500 will buy a lot of 7.62x39, even at today's prices.

+1.  When it comes to the stamped AKs it doesn't make sense to pay extra for an Arsenal.  Their reputation is more from their milled AKs.  The above two companies make good stamped rifles, and in 5.45 the accuracy can be surprising.

AK, of the two listed. Cheaper ammo, easier to clean, and in all honesty, (I assume you're also asking in regards to a SHTF situation), you're probably not going to be doing that much distance shooting, depending on where you live

No they don't.  Wouldn't have one.

My vote goes to AR10:

The AR10A2  second from the bottom of this pic was put together for less than $900.

The two below were added since the above pic.

Ended up buying this for $500 OTD, it's an Intratec build on an Armory USA receiver using either a Polish or Romanian kit.

Gonna hit the range with it on Friday

Good man! This means you and your AK will be happily chucking lead down range while the AR crowd is spending hours and hours trying to clean out the #@$&#@(  star chamber.

I shot an AK once, I really didnt care for it. It wasnt like when I shoot the AR platform where it feels tight and precise.
