Sweet - maybe you guys should start a small side business.  I for one, would easily pay $491 for that kind of "old-style" AR!

Seriously - conside this your first order if you want to

This is for those of you that say we never talk about guns on GD.

I've always wanted an AR that at least looked a lot like the M-16 I carried at Fort Polk back in 1970.  My buddy Tman and I have been shopping parts and finally found all we needed to put it together.  Tman is the gunsmith. Here it is:

photos.ar15.com/ImageGallery/Attachments/DownloadAttach.asp?iImageUnq=30580

It has:
Rock River Lower - $90
RR Kit - $54
USAF Colt M-16 upper from EE - $100
M-16 stock and grip - $12
Bolt and charging handle - $110
Dust cover - $4
Heavy duty extractor - $1
Buffer, tube, spring - $20

Total cost - $391

I like the 20 inch barrel, marked C MP C, for 1 in 12" and chrome chamber.

Looks like my old one, except for the bolt assist and the FA part.

I like it.  What do you guys think?

See it is people like you that ruin GD by talking about guns.

South fort.

"C - 1 - 2, We're the best.  Give us hell, sir!!"

We were once sent to learn about the Chaplian corps.  We got into the stands and the Chaplain, a Captain,  said, "Ready..........Seats!"

We began to holler, "C - 1 - 2, we're the best..."

And Drill Sergant Prigmore hollered, "Shut up and sit down!!!!!!!"

Then under his breath, "You dumb dicks...!  Telling the Chaplian to "Give you hell"."

Those were the days.

Nope.  I had one in Basic Training at Fort Polk.

In those days, (I don't know about now), we trained with regular Army troops during Basic.

Then we went to AIT, then we went home and they went to Viet Nam.

Well, you saved money with a used M-16 upper on EE... Most of us would have to resort to dealers or catalogs with that... You probably saved (easily) a good $75.

...But, that total cost... Damn, I didn't think you could build an AR for that little (without stealing or forcing people to give over parts at gunpoint).

I'm going to have to give the credit to Tman.  He will never pay $1.25 for a part that he thinks is worth only $1.00.

So, about how much would a regular AR build cost? About $500?

I see receivers (bare) for $79-99. Complete AR kits for $399...

I've seen stripped down kits (you build the upper) for $399 in the SGN, but a regular kit (with prebuilt, headspaced upper) goes for a mininum of $415.  (if I'm off here, tell me where the better prices are please!)
Slap on your lower, you're in business.

No, of course not, but it is available on GNS for $79 (plus shipping and transfer fees).

Lemme get you a link to it.

Total AR-15 part kit (minus only the receiver): $400
Receiver (cheapest available, they have other models too): $79 (yes, they are TEMPORARILY sold out)

You lowest cost will be to shop the EE and local gunshows for parts.  Because of transfer fees and shipping, local gunshows are also the lowest cost for stripped receivers. You can have a dealer order a Stag Arms receiver from Eagle Firearms for $85 plus fees and shipping. www.eaglefirearms.net/stag_arms.htm. RRA receivers are $80 dealer, but backordered for the present. A basic Model 1 Sales kit will run $415 plus $10 shipping and no FFL is required. Total for a "regular AR kit gun" with preassembled upper would be about $525. www.model1sales.com/item-detail.cfm?ID=KSE200&storeid=1&image=s20prek.gif

Why would you want a slab side lower? The slab side is a colt thing and original M-16 had the raised fence at the mag well...He has the M-16 look down...

Fal doc....You were ripped if you paid $420 for a SP-1 in 1979...I bought mine in '79 and it cost me $290 at Edelmans...

79 for a receiver IS cheap. It is a cast one though, so I think I'd pay the extra 10 bucks for a forged Mega which includes shipping. But still, 79 IS cheap.

I built several AR configurations using J&T and Dpms kits all with the price around $500 or less.

Purest will hate me, but chrome is overrated if you live in a dry environment.

YMMV

Tman, really, $85 for an AR-15 receiver is pretty damn good.

Instead of shopping around on EE and perhaps get something good or something not worth my cash or going to the local ripoff show, I think I'd just as soon use GNS or another online dealer. Not to mention, if done that way, you can return it. If I get a shitty receiver or a cracked one or something defective at a gunshow... I can't return that a week later.

If you buy online, you CAN return. So, saving $10-15 whilst taking all those risks? Nah, man, I'll just sell out another ten.

As promised, a range report.

Went to the range today with my friend Tman and we "wrung it out".  I was shooting Israeli surplus ammo, which is pretty accurate military surplus.  No malfunctions at all, with around 80 rounds fired.

On the bench:

Target was at 50 yards to help 56 year old eyes.  Point of aim was 6 o'clock hold.  It appears someone had sighted in this upper.  Not a bad group for these old eyes.  Impact was right where I was aiming.

Then stood on my hind legs and shot like a man.  Target was a drink can on the 100 yards backstop which I managed to bounce around with little problem.

We couldn't help but notice a few things about these "old style" rifles.

1.  They shoot well (accurately).

2.  Recoil is less noticable than with a lighter AR (even though .223s are not "kickers")

3.  Noise is less, maybe because the muzzle is further from your face, and longer barrel.

4.  They are fun to shoot.

Wish you could have all been there.
