My all time favorite bomb truck...I can not count how may models that I built of that aircraft. Awesome thread OP.

My grandpop flew them at the end of his career. He started with Corsairs and flew most everything in the naval inventory inbetween, but the A7 was his favorite plane.

It may be an F8, but I always thought the Cuban recon flight scene from the movie 13 Days was awesome.

They were good attack birds in their time. But I'll take what replaced them (F-16 for the USAF, F-18 for the USN) any day of the week.

There is a lot of non-action in that movie, except for a great U2 recon scene as well, but otherwise a great historical flick centered on the Cuban missile crisis. |

Unfortunately no pics but in 1989 I was driving by NAS Dallas (Grand Prairie) and glimpsed
the coolest A-7E's I ever saw. The first was an overall Zinc Chromate Yellow A-7 at the Vought plant headed to the paint shop as well as a painted silver A-7E behind it. |

PSA, War Story to follow: Once in Vietnam I pulled my Cobra up out of a steep dive after blasting a target with my ordinance and as I came around with my nose pointed toward the sky I looked up through the canopy to see an A-7 coming down the chute apparently attacking the same target. Before I could do anything, he pickles a pair of 500 lb. bombs! That is a sight you'll never forget, that air intake on the front looks huge coming at you. Well, I damn near rolled my Cobra over upside down trying to get out of the way as the Corsair passed me within 100 feet. I'm not sure he ever even saw us.
Apparently, another FAC had come on station and was working on another frequency assigning targets to the TAC Air arriving overhead without first checking to see if anyone else was working the area. .............................and that's how air-to-air tragedies happen |
|
I wish the USN had gone forward with the North American proposal for the A7 simply because it would have been neat to have a Fury/Sabre variant in service into the 90s.

A school by me has one on a post on display in team colors.
Couple of kids got caught fucking in the intake a few years ago haha |

They were part of the Air Wing on my first Westpac in '88. We were giving an air/sea power show and they dragged an old research ship out to serve as a target.
There were strafing runs and two bombs from an A7 sank it. It was something to see. |

A-7E's were the best at what they did. Other than speed and a slight edge in maneuverability, the legacyBug couldn't touch the Corsai.

(clears throat) Caauuuausssssssssssse I'm a pilot, I only care about me I don't give a fuck if I bring your jet back code 2 or code 3 I'm a pilot and I never make mistakes I'll take the credit if it aint broken, I'll blame you if it breaks the 'real' problem with the legacy bug is that it makes for shitty internet arguements, because besides from its legs and a couple other minor shortfalls, its a true 'jack of all trades, master of none.' and the place where it really shines over its predecessor is how it performs below deck. So while a great improvement in the real world, who the hell ever falls in love with a hornet. (other than the drivers and definitely the maintainers who probably took a piss all over the back of their tomcats after they all returned from their final flight and are now in the relative utopia that is the superbug. |

Loved the A-7. Was very disappointed when our local ANG unit lost theirs and got saddled with lawn darts (errr, F-16s). Miss those A-7s. Sigh.

I was doing some research last week on and AF crash w/ejection next to the University of Arizona campus in 1978. I thought it was an A-10, turns out it was an A7D. Here is a PDF to all the articles and fire dept. photos for those interested. It killed people on the ground, crashed next to where the UA rec center is now. |

How was it that Air National Guard units were equipped with the Navy A7 aircraft? I just know my former state growing up the NAFEC NJ Air Guard unit still had F106s into the 90s. |
