Right there with you, man.

Some guy dies who's been TRYING to die for years and the media acts like someone important died.

I'd far rather see the media spend time reporting on the guys who died actually DOING something worthwhile. You know, guys like soldiers.

A 19-year-old Alaska-based soldier from central Wisconsin is dead and two other soldiers wounded after their Stryker vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department says Pvt. Ryan J. Larson of Friendship, Wisc., died Wednesday in Kandahar Province.

Larson had been in the U.S. Army for only a year. The infantryman joined the Army last June and arrived at Fort Wainwright in October.

Larson and the two wounded soldiers were assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright. They deployed to Afghanistan with their 4,000-soldier brigade in April.

The two wounded soldiers were not seriously hurt.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says Larson "gave his life so that we may enjoy the blessings of a free society."

My point is, I get really pissed off how Ryan Dunn can crash his car after leaving a Bar and its all i see all over the internet and im sure it will be all over TV tonight.
I pisses me off how troops are treated in the country. Not mentioned in the news unless its a huge event. Let alone get 6 pages in GD

I understand your post, and I agree.

But you have to understand that Dunn was put in the public spotlight.

No doubt that most of GD respects the military more than a celebrity, but hell where is the DRAMA in this type of thread.

In all fairness, the Ryan Dunn thread is 7 pages of people who do and don't give a fuck about him arguing back and forth.

In this thread, there isn't any question of whether or not the men in the OP are important enough to care about.

Thread length isn't necessarily indicative of the quality of content, more often than not it just means there's something for people to argue about.

This post brought to you by the letter 6 and the color twelve.

This is true.  If I'm not mistaken, the first few posts in that thread are along the lines of "meh, who cares, it's what you get when you act like those guys act and drive drunk."

In general, I agreewith the idea though, the masses are so wrapped up in entertainers and athletes and don't even think twice about those men in the OP.  But thread length here isn't a measure of that.

The topic or idea of this thread hits home for me too, because I'm getting married in a week and a half and at the rehearsal dinner we are giving out little yellow ribbon candy favors my fiance made , since my close cousin is deployed with the Marines right now, my other cousin just enlisted 2 weeks ago, and I'm wearing my dress whites for the ceremony.  Along with words of thanks, I also wanted to say a few words and thoughts about my cousins and service-members in general deployed overseas and the sacrifice they make for our country and our way of life.

Would you believe that my fiance's liberal hippy sister got pissy because at the idea of that because she thinks it will make people uncomfortable, especially those that don't support the military!  She says it's too much in everyone's face and is pushing an agenda on people that don't agree with me.  I told her good, if a few words from me made people uncomfortable enough to think about how easy their lives are compared to so many in the world and the sacrifices of great Americans to give them that, then I did a good thing.  The nerve this girl has

Sorry to hijack but I was fuming over this principle today already and then this thread perfectly epitomized how warped so many people in this country are.  I'm with you OP

Actually Devin Snyder was female.  She was buried not far form here last Saturday.  Some 2000 thousand or so people showed up for her funeral.  One member of the Patriot Gard called it the largest turnout for a soldier's funeral he had ever seen.  When her body was transported from the Rochester Airport to her home town some 40 miles south there were so many people lining the route that the procession was never out of site of a person with a flag.  Rural Western NY is a lot more like Texas than NYC.

So Rest In Peace you soldiers all.  Words simply fail.  Thanks to you and your families.

You really want front page coverage for the soldiers that are killed? To put a personal face/loss on each and every one and plaster it all over all media?

That would be the quickest way to destroy the morale of this country for any military conflict ever.

It is what it is, and there's nothing wrong with people feeling bad at the loss of a celebrity; it doesn't make them bad people because they got to see a lot of that person and maybe felt a connection to him/her versus someone in the military that no one has ever heard of, seen, ANYTHING. Usually they just see a name in the paper.

If someone went into the military knowing or expecting to get fame and fortune and celebrity status out of service, I would probably question their motives for joining.

That being said, my heart goes out to the families of those killed in these conflicts, those who gave all so that we have the freedom to make a living getting shot in the nuts with a paintball gun, if that's the career path you choose.

It wasn't that long ago when every time the press had an article about a Soldier's death, we had threads ranting about how the press was intentionally trying to make news out of them in order to support their anti-war agenda.

All those guys are heroes of the highest order.    It isn't open to discussion or controversy.

However, your comparison and your gripe is missing the entire point.
Go back and read the SIX pages.   How many comments are positive thoughts and grief filled testimonials?   Does that thread really strike you as an obituary filled with accolades and respect?     Would you want those comments written about you?

Or would you rather live and die in relative obscurity, but with honor?

Fame isn't everything.  In fact, It is nothing at all.

Did not pay much attention to the Ryan Dunn thread since I do not really find Jackass entertaining. I dont want to sound insensative to his family's loss but  you are completely correct, there should be more important things we should be hearing about... ie like honor this fallen hero who served!

R.I.P. to all the brave soldiers in our armed forces who have fought for us and paid the ultimate price.
