They can do it because we are very weak now, because that's what national leadership wants. |

Q: How many Virginia Class subs does it take to sink (4) Chinese vessels operating in the Bering Sea ?
A: 1. The other 3 are there to record and take notes. |

Their government has not changed substantially over the years, yet we continue to fund them. The worst thing the US ever did was allow them to leverage their labor pool for cash. What they are buying with our cash is currently sailing the bering sea. Same thing will happen with iran. |

Thats practicaly what i was going to say. 5 ships has to be pretty much their entire navy. One seawolf sub could take them all out. |

While using high technology everyday that is almost exclusively made in China. foreign nations who did wanted cheap labor to build the things they created? In the grand scheme being able to copy someone else's crap and produce it in substantial quantities count for a lot. The Chicoms have gained a lot of experience in doing just that. They don't need to make things 100% as good as everyone else as long they can get most of the way there and deliver it in volumes that make per unit cost relatively low. ETA: when Apple is putting the new i whatever out for bid with manufacturers they spec certain acceptable failure rates, materials, thicknesses, coatings and every other possible thing. The Chinese have learned very well how to deliver and meet the requirements set forth. In doing so they have learned a lot by a kind of reverse engineering. They see what others do and they have learned how to produce it with acceptable failure rates for the rest of the world. The developers don't spec parts and materials to last 20 years on televisions or computers because it would drive the price up and they know something bigger and better isn't far off. Why spend the money building computers to last 15 years when most people are going to replace them in 5 because the new ones do more? ETA II: I wouldn't really discount any Asian culture's ability to invent either. They typically place exponentially greater emphasis on education and work ethic than the west. In my job I deal with a lot of Asian engineers and those guys are some of the most well educated, demanding, and hardest working people I have ever seen. 14-20 hour workdays seven days a week for months on end? That's just doing your job to most of them. |
