I bought a 2012 Silverado 4x4 WT package last year for $18,500.

It's a basic regular cab, V-6 but basic aint basic no more.

It was my first brand, new truck.

If you aren't towing over a 5K pound trailer I say Ridgeline.

I know many people that have them that live in town and need a "truck" on occasion (I am one of them).  Of those that own a Ridgeline one guy sold his thinking he needed a real truck and bought an F150.  He had it a year and traded it for another Ridgeline as he just didn't use it and hated the ride.  He also towed some heavy loads (5K+ pounds) long distances with his old Ridgeline.  While I don't agree with that the Ridgeline is a good truck for suburban life.

If you need to tow big loads then nothing will do that is less than a 3/4 ton with a diesel for ease of towing and mileage in my opinion.

I've had a Ridgeline for 5 years, got it used for $23K back in 2007.  I've put 70k miles on it, haven't towed anything with it, but have gotten some heavy loads of soil, etc. from the local nursery that required multiple trips because you can only haul 1100 lbs in the bed.  It gets terrible gas mileage for a Honda, the ONLY thing I really like about it is the locking in-bed trunk, it is not a bad rig for a daily driver, and easier to haul stupid crap I need for household projects (except lumber) than a SUV.  I make several trips shooting USPSA matches a month, and carpool with a few other guys, and we can get all our gear in the trunk, which makes it nice of we stop to eat somewhere afterwards.

That being said, I am likely to get a Tundra within the year, or an F150.

I've personally put 170,000 miles on an 06 Frontier. 4.0 6 speed 2wd

What its needed to stay on the road:
Axle bearing
Fuel Sender unit
O2 Sensor

Average anywhere from 19.5 to 21.25 mpg. Usually 20.25~

Your best bang for the buck will absolutely be an F150!  Dont listen to all that shit about 3/4 ton trucks and especially Diesel.  If you want ungodly service costs and big time ass pains then buy a Diesel if you want a fucking real deal ass truck buy an F150.  I own a F250 and miss my F150 every other day........   For real you dont want the up keep costs of a Diesel trust me.

I'd dig around to find the best deal available on a F-150 with the 5.4L V8.

Trucks with the newer powertrains will be out of your price range, and that was about as good as it got in the previous generation.

The Toyota Tacomas are pretty good too, but I don't see the point of sacrificing fuel economy to get a truck just to end up with such a little ass bed.

I own a fucking diesel so uh NO I'm not joking...If he's not going to be towing in sort of heavy capacity he'd be a fucking idiot to buy a diesel it's the equivilant to an exwife!  A gasser costs next to nothing to service next to a diesel.  Do You Own a Diesel?  ARE YOU JOKING??

F150 all the way. You could get a low mileage supercrew with the triton V8 and you should be very happy with that for alot of years. My 2010 supercrew gets 20mpg on the highway and around 16-17 in town. Rides very quiet and great on long trips. If you want to save some money, you could also go for the supercab F150 which are a bit cheaper. Can't go wrong with ford F150 though, my son has a 2001 supercab and still going stong.

This.

The F250s with the 7.3L PSD are bad ass, but that this point you're talking about a 10 year old truck at least.  If you don't need a diesel, you'll get more/newer truck for your money with an F150.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the OP was stating his family size as a data point. That's to say perhaps, just perhaps, he has decided to buy a pickup and was stating his family size so as to widen the aperture on what type of truck he might be interested in and people in GD might suggest. In this example if he stated that he had 3 adult sized and one child sized family member a suggestion might be that his choices were limited to a 4 door pick up. Does that help you two better understand?

All speculation on my part but I have to assume that the term "need", when analyzed using Maslow's chart, might be a synonym for "would like" or "want".....

I've owned a few Silverados, an F150, and my brother is (and has been) a Dodge Ram guy. My current truck (2006 Nissan Titan 4x4 Crew Cab) is the best truck I have ever owned. Period.

It gets decent mileage for a fullsize truck, it can tow 9000# and it's got all the comforts inside (power, heated leather, etc, etc). It's actually the first non-domestic vehicle I've ever owned, and I don't regret it at all.
