yep, my .17 is like a laser.   Took out 30 squirrels last year, used only 30 rounds at 100-120 yards with a 10x super sniper.

One shot one kill Sniper Gaspain!

I was at Bass Pro Shop saw this tagged at $329, and after reading this post I went for it.

The best part it was missed priced, it rang up $399, but they had to give it to me for $329.

Now I have to look for a scope. I hope you all are happy now.

ooooh nice rifle, you happen to live near murphy, NC? I shoot at a range near that town.

I tried taking my first game with the new rifle today so I could post some cool pics but it was a shitty day, not a thing is sight besides a lil brown thrasher that kept me company for a while.

I've got a Savage 93R17 with the wood stock. I got it when HMRs were starting to get hot a few years back. You think the Glock vs 1911 thread is bad, get on a predator hunting forum and ask if HMR is big enough for coyotes. Two threads a day at least on that subject.

Still have it and you're right the accuracy is unbelieveable. Head shots on squirrels are messy thought. Even with the bull barrel, they're not overly heavy so toting them is still fun.

When we first got ours (I had to talk my dad in to one, that's what family is for) we weren't sure what they would do at longer ranges so after tuning them in we put some ritz crackers out at 150 yards and starting shooting off the hood of the truck. They didn't break so we though we were missing. We went downrange and saw that they were just punching holes right through the crackers.

The sucky part is I should have bought a couple cases of the Hornady back when it was $6.50 a box instead of $11-12. Story of my life.

lol nice, I was shooting clothes hanger clips off the target stand at 50 and 75 yards...the guy next to me shooting was impressed so he asked to try, after his 2nd shot he could consistently hit the clothes pins at 50 and 75.  Very shootable caliber.

I have a CZ 452 Varmint in .17 HM2 that's an absolute tack driver. Consistently .5 MOA. Not bad for a $350 rifle shooting $0.10/round ammunition!

A .24'' center to center 5 shot group shot at 50 yards, prone, with a sand bag as a rest.

just got a Marlin...now I have to put a scope on it.
Ordered a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 Ballistic Plex.

I'll just have to stare at it until the scope arrives.

Yes, I've been a believer for a while now.  My 'faith' is reduced when there is any wind, though.

100 yards with a Marlin 917VS and 17gr V-max:

I can't wait to go hunting now.  Will be able to tag squirrels way on out.  I honestly didn't think I had that good of shooting in me.  I'm still amazed by the group.

Me and my Youngest Son each got a Savage in 17 HMR, we shoot crows and groundhogs with it, well my oldest Son asked his little brother if he could use his 17 HMR to squirrel hunt with and the oldest son still hasn't given the gun back, he may end up buying the gun but my oldest son has killed MANY and I do mean MANY squirrels with the 17 HMR.
I cut a crow in half with a 40 yd shot and using a 20 Grn XTP, it is a fun round

Edit: 1/4 inch grid there... just a lil bigger than a 1/2 inch group of 3

To me it sounds alot louder than a .22LR. Has a distinct crack to it.

lol, speaking of crows, after I was finished squirrel hunting I waited around for about 30 minutes waiting for a crow to show itself, they were everywhere, just couldnt spot em.  Later in the day I called my dad and asked em about eating crows, he basically told me they are the carp of the bird world .  YEs Im a redneck, and yes I want to kill something and eat it with this new 17, haha

I like my son's (age 11) .17HMR savage so much that if it weren't a lefty, I'd borrow it more often.  He hasn't put a single round down the 10/22 since I bought him this.  Makes him feel like a marksman.

Dang, I tried my local Bass Pro today, but they wouldn't take less than $399 for it. I even tried "some guy on the internet got it for $329" but, amazingly, that didn't work!

Question for you guys shooting squirrels with 17HMR or any rifle: since they're typically up in the trees, you're shooting up with a rifle. You consider that safe? How well do you have to know the area, and which way you're facing, to take a shot?

17 HMR has less weight, so if you miss the squirrel, it will actually have less energy coming down than a heavier bullet such as .22 LR.  BUT I dont know, im a hillbilly, not a scientist.  I dont shoot up when Im at my house anyway, because of neighbors.  I do shoot any direction I like when Im in the national forest.

How long a barrel is needed for the  .17 variants? One of my cans is rated to .17 HMR on an 18" barrel, so unless it really reduces efficiency that's the longest I'd want.

Did the bullet actually seperate the snakes head from its body, or did you chop it off after shooting it?
