Here's what I e-mailed to the Governator:

Mr. Schwartzenegger,

I was appalled to hear that a ban on .50 caliber rifles passed the CA Senate and Assembly and is headed to your desk to sign. These rifles are extremely heavy, cost several thousands of dollars, and have NEVER BEEN USED IN A CRIME.

If you would like to preserve safety and freedom, energize your Republican base and have any hope of delivering CA for President Bush in November, I urge you to VETO this legislation.

Thank You,
JCKnife

The nation is infected with cancers at both ends.

It's coming.

How's about all you Kalif fockers call and write the Governator and tell him, if he signs the bill, you're voting for Kerry.

Maybe make him think the pres election may hinge on the issue a bit?

Oh for fucks sake...

Here is my reply to the governor.

Mr. Schwartzenegger,

I am a born and raised Californian.  I am a Republican and a proud patriot of these United States.  I also voted for you during the recall election.

It has come to my attention that AB50 (ban on .50BMG firearms) has passed the Senate and is now headed for your desk.  As a gun collector and target shooter I am appauled (though not suprised) that this piece of filth has made it this far.

I strongly encourage you to not sign this bill into law.

By the way, I have lived all of my 25 years in the city of San Diego.  The California assault weapons ban caused me to seriously question the wisdom of continuing to reside in this state.  Your election to governor gave me hope.  If you sign this bill it will very likely put the final nail in the coffin of my decision to permanently leave this state, never to return.

I encourage you to do the right thing and put AB50 directly into the shredder when it comes to your desk.

My Name
Proud American

I just called and informed them that my 1ce and 2ce a year (EVERY YEAR TO CALIFORNIA TO VISIT RELATIVES!!!) tourism dollars would "not go to support a state that doesn't support it's sportsmen"

MAKE SURE TO PLAY UP THIS ANGLE

This seemed to really punch the right button because the girl on the other end of the line said "okay, so you're a hunter, a sportsman?  "  and then later confirmed that I was indeed a private citizen and not the owner of a gun store.

Apparently they know to fear the hunting and sportsman vote so

FOR BOB'S SAKE, CALL YOURSELF A SPORTSMAN and remind them that the rifles cost upwards of $2000 !

Having just come off of an unsuccessful fight against a county-wide recycling fee on our property tax bills in my state, I can say without a doubt that "the people" have very little chance of fighting the power.  I couldn't even get a six-member county board to listen to a rational argument, what chance does anyone have with an entire legislature?  Talk about ramming things through--the fee got one hearing and then was raced into "law" before the budget year ended.  I suspect extreme malfeasance on the part of the people operating the landfill, possibly even criminal malfeasance.

All I'm saying is, don't get on the Kali board members, they are fighting the good fight.  It's just that Kali is going over the cliff now and will probably be taking the rest of the country down with it.  Schwarzeneggar is not going to be able to stop the slide, it's too far along.

Those ignorate of history are doomed to repeat the mistakes of history.

Anyone want to guess which state laws were used as the model for the Federal Assualt Weapon ban signed by that famous California President William Jefferson Clinton?

Other states look to California for ideas ... stand-by mothers.

"Democratic lawmakers are eyeing a ban on .50-caliber sniper rifles that can fire armor-piercing bullets and could cause catastrophic damage if used in attacks against airplanes and chemical-storage containers.

Rep. James P. Moran, Virginia Democrat, yesterday introduced a bill to ban the commercial sale of .50-caliber sniper rifles, with exemptions for military and law-enforcement use.
(none)

He said these weapons, which are less regulated than handguns, are accurate at 2,000 yards and can pierce the metal shells of rail cars carrying hazardous cargo and low-flying passenger aircraft.

"Just imagine if a terrorist got their hands on one of these guns and trained their sights on a train pulling hazardous cargo through the heart of Washington, D.C. It's a horrifying scenario that only a terrorist would want to see unfold," Mr. Moran said.

He said there is evidence that members of the al Qaeda terrorist group have purchased 25 of the weapons. Mr. Moran said the weapons, which are sold legally to hunters and sportsmen for shooting competitions, should only be for military use.

A study conducted by the District-based Violence Policy Center (VPC) showed that rounds from a .50-caliber rifle can penetrate armor plating. In addition, explosive rounds for such weapons are available on the market.

"There is something gravely wrong with the virtually unregulated sale of these antiarmor guns in an era when our president tells us daily that we are in a war against terrorism," said Tom Diaz, VPC senior policy analyst, who urged Congress to pass Mr. Moran's bill.

But gun advocates said the bill is just another move to infringe upon the rights of law-abiding citizens to bear arms.

"Since 9/11, gun-ban groups and politicians have shamelessly tried to tie their failing agenda for gun control to the terrorist attacks," said Andrew Arulanandam, spokesman for the National Rifle Association.

"The sad fact is that terrorists using box cutters, not guns, were the cause of those attacks."

The office of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay did not return calls for comment.

But the Texas Republican has torpedoed other Democratic efforts at gun control in the past, saying that there was no point in bringing to the floor this year a bill to extend the federal assault-weapons ban because "the votes aren't there."

The Senate has also proven a difficult place for gun restrictions, having defeated the assault-weapons extension over a provision to grant gun makers immunity from many civil lawsuits.

Only a few jurisdictions, such as Contra Costa County in California, have banned sales of the weapons. The New York state Assembly also has passed a bill to ban such sales, but the state Senate has yet to vote."

Missed the hue and cry over the New York state assembly ban

Well, gee, the Federal ban is sunsetting, yet the Kali one is not.  So much for that comparison.

Oh, a dem introduced a .50 cal ban in Congress.  Well, it passed in Kali, but it won't in DC.

Oh, NY state Assembly has passed a .50 cal ban, but the state Senate has not.  Big deal.  Even if they do, one expects NY, Jersey, Maryland, and Illinois to follow Kali.  Does that mean that the rest of the states and the Feds are going to follow their lead?  NO!  Kali is not as important as some of you think.

Would a city council Libertarian be able to do anything about this state ban?

As some else said, the will of the people is being ignored out there, so why keep fighting it?  If there was any hope of turning it around, I could see staying and fighting it.

Do you see any hope or do you just see it getting worse?  That is a legit question, wanting your opinion on that question.

The Kaliban, for instance, exempts some rimfire rifles but a city ban might not.

You are probably right LARRYG regarding gun laws but it is still something that should at least be a concern.  A couple of examples:

The most obvious for us: Gun laws.  Despite the fact that the AWB will be expiring for now it was influenced by the 89 Roberti-Roos law.  If any future bans come out they will probably be based on exisitng California Gun laws.

Textbooks for schools:  Textbook publishers for K-12 will write books based on the needs of Texas and California.

Auto emissions: If there was ever a case of the other 49 states following what California does it is auto emissions.
POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION:  Ca-1961,  49 states-1963
AIR INJECTION W/CONTROLLED COMBUSTION SYSTEM Ca- 1966, 49 states-1968
CHARCOAL CANISTER EVAPORATIVE CONTROL SYSTEMS Ca-1970, 49 states-1971
EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION Ca-1972, 49 states-1973
"THREE-WAY" CATALYTIC CONVERTERS Ca-1980,  49 states-1981

Currently, there are five states that follow California emissions standards for new automobiles.  I bet you in a few more years all autos will be, just to make it easier from a manufacturers standpoint.

The first vote was 35/36 (71 votes) and defeated.  There are 80 members of the assembly so the ghost voting was done with the remaining missing 9 votes.  Still not enough for a 2/3's majority, so it must have required a simple majority?

As I already stated, I expect Jersey to be one of the few to follow their example.  New Jersey is not most states, it is one of 3 or 4 that would follow.  I still maintain that the vast majority of states will not follow their lead.

You are about to read a list of 45 goals that found their way down the halls of our great Capitol back in 1963. As you read this, 39 years later, you should be shocked by the events that have played themselves out. I first ran across this list 3 years ago but was unable to attain a copy and it has bothered me ever since. Recently, Jeff Rense posted it on his site and I would like to thank him for doing so. http://www.rense.com

Communist Goals (1963) Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35 January 10, 1963

Current Communist Goals EXTENSION OF REMARKS OF HON. A. S. HERLONG, JR. OF FLORIDA IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Thursday, January 10, 1963 .

Mr. HERLONG. Mr. Speaker, Mrs. Patricia Nordman of De Land, Fla., is an ardent and articulate opponent of communism, and until recently published the De Land Courier, which she dedicated to the purpose of alerting the public to the dangers of communism in America.

At Mrs. Nordman's request, I include in the RECORD, under unanimous consent, the following "Current Communist Goals," which she identifies as an excerpt from "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen:

[From "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen]

1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.

2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.

3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament [by] the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength.

4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.

5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites.

6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination.

7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.

8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.

9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.

10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N.

11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.)

12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.

13. Do away with all loyalty oaths.

14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office.

15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

18. Gain control of all student newspapers.

19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.

20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policy-making positions.

21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."

23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a "religious crutch."

28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."

29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.

30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man."

31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.

32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture--education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.

33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus.

34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.

36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.

37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.

38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat].

39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.

40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.

41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.

42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use ["]united force["] to solve economic, political or social problems.

43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.

44. Internationalize the Panama Canal.

45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction [over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction] over nations and individuals alike.
