Not even at distributor pricing for the stuff we use.

My brother gave me a sporterized Swedish Mauser.  The thing came with a synthetic stock and I believe he paid about $150 for it.

The piece shoots sub MOA groups with ease.  I think that it would provide the basis for a cheap sniper rifle if one were to add the right scope.

Not much out there at that price point. I would look at a 700P, FN TSR XP or Patrol rifle which is an Winchester action or maybe a Savage. Lots of guys always brag about how cheap they are but supposedly are also still good shooters. I don't have any experience with them personally though so I cant tell you. Both the 700P and FN are solid guns out of the box that both allow you to upgrade as finances allow.

$1k should come close to buying a Savage 10FP or Remington 700 SPS Varmint and a Leupold VX-2 Rifle Scope 4-12x 40mm Adjustable Objective.

Not perfect, but a good balanced combo.

My suggestion for the most efficient route:  Buy a $1000 worth of scope, put it on one of your ARs and and limit yourself to 6-700 yards for awhile (assuming your ARs are 5.56 guns).  Then save up another $1000 (or more) and buy a really nice rifle, and put your really nice scope on it.

Not always true.  I bought a used Model 700 varmit synthetic and Luepold for under $800.00.  It shoots less than
MoA.

Aren't all the 5Rs stainless?  Nothing wrong with stainless, but a shinny sniper rifle never made much sense to me

Finnish M39 Nagant with good mount and bent bolt handle will run you $450.00'ish. Add a good scope mount and $450.00 scope to finish up.

What did you use to replace the bottom metal for the detachable mag?

The bottom metal is from CDI.  I did the inletting and bedding myself.  Wasn't very difficult to do.  I think they do it for something like $60 if you buy the DBM from them.  Can't remember the guys name, but he has a good reputation and was quite helpful to me.

Its a McMillian something or other that I bought off a friend.  The paint job is duracoat that I did myself.  Had to learn how to airbrush  I did a big write-up in the refinishing section a year or so ago.
