Original deal: SP5, B&T stock, + $1500 for "BNVD's"Issue: item was not as described, in my opinion, and communications ceased
Complaint #1: housing was described as older but without issues besides minor tube blems. However, there is a major issue, the dovetail is set very far back on the unit and it's very difficult to get it close to the user's face. When I contacted NV Devices for more information, they confirmed that this was a known issue and addressed shortly. This was brushed off as a "no guarantees it'll work for your setup" - so I tried it with multiple setups and people and it was not ideal for any of them. When I asked what it would work with, no response. If it doesn't work with the most ubiquitous mount and helmets on the market... that's clearly a problem.
Complaint #2: Ocular lens claimed to be Optronics and adaptable to standard accessories are in fact not. I tried to fit LLI 30mm filters to the unit and the female threads were obviously a size or two larger. Upon further investigation, it appears the lens are "Apache" in make. Very disappointed I can't even use filters on it.
Complaint #3: Based off the image quality, I am not inclined to believe these are OMNI VII repots like advertised. There is significantly more noise and less resolution compared to a tube with known specs around the OMNI VII specs. Of course, I have no way of knowing for sure, but I will follow up on this further down. Looking more closely, the original pics were out of focus and had the illuminator turned on at close proximity to a wall, thus washing out the appearance of the image as well as "artifacts" or blems.
Complaint #4: I proposed a trade-in as a resolution since the seller is a dealer of NVGs (which should be good given the value of the exchanged items at retail). The idea was entertained and the options were narrowed down, until suddenly, radio silence. I sent 2 emails and have not received a response back.
Normally I would just find ways to work through it, and I have tried to, as evidenced. The LLI purple filters do decrease the noise and improve the image, but they can't even be fit to the unit! For something of this price range, I would expect slightly better from a specialist in the industry. I do appreciate the willingness to help, however, the issues were not resolved at the end of the day.
Given the fact that there are no reference pics of said unit on the internet, I had no idea that the serial number had been removed from it as well, until I contacted NVD. As somebody new to dual tube night vision, I had no idea that the placement of the dovetail would drastically limit its adjust-ability. Overall, this was a very negative experience for me, but I am hoping it can be resolved. Given the actual state of the unit I think these are fair as I am already losing money here. The original trade was quite favorable and I've tried just about every damn thing I can.My proposed resolutions:
An actual trade-in for a 14 + cash or accessories of equal value, so I can send it to NVD with a previously owned unit for a proper conversion to a usable BNVD, or another housing/tube TBD.
Partial refund of $600 and adapters to fit the 30mm filter, that way I can pay for a machinist to design and manufacture a specific adapter for the dovetail to make the unit usable and resell-able in good conscious if I decide to do so.
Or, a reversal of the original deal, as a last resort.
I'd like some opinions on this though, and am considering sending the unit back to NVD for an evaluation. They can then officially report the history of the unit, specs, issues, etc.
