I have liked the looks of short shotguns since probably puberty, but have never pulled the trigger on building or buying on. I keep thinking about getting a stamp and cutting down a double barrel side by side because, well, the movie Once Upon a time in Mexico. I've seen it done with an over under, and that seems pretty cool, too.

however, I can't seem to find a cheap enough donor double so I'm debating a shockwave (or similar) so I can play with it while the stamp clears. Then just bolt a stock on and you're good. However, I never got the appeal of saving 4" for $200, just like I wouldn't SBR an AR and then put a 14.5 on it. seems crazy.

what says those of you that have done it? This won't probably be serious defense, though maybe a hotel/road trip companion within the state.

Shockwave + brace and keep it as a "firearm" is my vote.

I think its more fun than my AR SBR and it gets WAY more attention. I shot a sporting clays shoot with it and at every single station at least 1 person asked about it. Definitely get it threaded for chokes.

with shockwaves now available, I think the only shotgun really worth papers is a cut down double barrel...

although my SBS 870 10" and Benelli M4 14" are plenty fun, not sure I would bother with the papers on the 870 now that you can get a shockwave

You can do so much more with an SBS than a Shockwave.

This thread finally convinced me to pull the trigger on a very nice CZ hammer coach gun to Form 1. Do any of you guys have current pricing from Rose Action Sports? In addition to shortening the barrels I'll probably have them lengthen the forcing cones and maybe do some trigger work.

Rose action just cut my 1100 barrel, threaded it for chokes and silver soldered a bead sight on, door to door $175.

Agreed. I played with a birds head grip on mine for a while. It looked essentially like the Shockwave.

But after playing with it for a bit, I decided I much prefer it with a buttstock.

I SBS'ed my Vepr 12 it's fun to shoot, I got lucky and mine will run cheap birdshot from Walmart. Hard to tell from the picture but its 12.5" but I'm thinking about cutting it down to 10.5"

I have been debating doing it to my older 870 that was used as a police beanbag gun. The only thing holding me back so far is I can't decide what length to go for, like 12.5" or 14 " with a magazine extension. I see all the pics on here and love the look of both.

why not both? Can you do like an SBR lower and have 2 barrels? I would think if you had the mag tube set up for a 12.5 you could just pop a 14" on if you wanted.

I bought a pretty cheap but decent shape stevens 20ga many years ago with the thought of chopping it. Metal is real good but the stock was beat up a fair amount.

This is no fancy shotgun , some plain hardwood stock (birch?) and 20 + years ago cost me $85

Messing about I stripped the stock ,raised dents with steam , sanded and refinished it. Pretty much a experiment in teaching myself to re do a stock with something I
wouldn't cry about if it didn't turn out nice.

Considering what it was it actually turned out pretty nice looking with stain and a oil finish.

I seem to see a certain following for this type of gun . I suppose many guys remember a family member having one and this demand has driven the value quite a bit.

Never really worked out in my mind if I wanted to cut it back to minium legal length or do the SBS route.

Now I am thinking the fun of shooting something shorter could easily fade and I would kick myself for taking the sawsall to it

This is what I did.
Bought a 14 inch police trade in then came across a 20 inch slug barrel and had RAS cut an thread to 12 inches.
Still need a Salvo to go with it.

Yeah for sure I could do both, but I was meaning which to do first? I am indecisive and would likely toss a coin to decide

Well, my vote is yes.  SBS's are a hoot to shoot, and useful too.

Go 12.5" for maximum compact-ness without fussing with the mag tube

20" rifle sight barrel, I need to get a mag tube extension that matches better, it bugs my OCD

I took my 590A1 and 870P to Vang Comp to be chopped and ported.

Before that I rarely even shot them.  Now at least 1 goes on shooting trips.

The new shockwave mini shotguns are hard to beat at $350 and no tax stamp. 870 or 500, take your pick.
This is an AOW with stamp.
