came across a fair quantity of ammo in original boxes in cans.lake city m 118 173 grain 2550 fps. all lot #lc-82c132-022.have any of y all used this in m1as ? everything ive read is to use 168 gr. I would like opinions please. haven't got a firm price but im thinking .75 a round because I do not know storage conditions. cardboard boxes are intact and cardboard sleeve inside can looks good. the cans have some rust and wear on outside .also, I have ar 10s too im just wondering if this is more of a bolt action round. thanks in advance for you posts. just re-read my post..i am 55 so don't judge me on typing skills

M118 173 grain fmj match/sniper ammo was inconsistent. Some rifles would shoot it very well, other rifles not much different than M80 ball.

A ammo collector will probably be more interested than a high power shooter. It was still used by the Armed Forces until the early 90's or so.

The brass is reloadable and that makes it worth something. I wouldn't buy it unless it was under .40 cents a round.

I just bought 1000 brand new primed Lake City cases for $166.00 shipped.

It works fine in bolt actions and semi-auto's. It had to use a powder and charge that played well in M14/M21 rifles as well as M40's.

Ok thanks for your response sir .im just a casual shooter and came across these. Seems like I’d be better off rolling my own . Gonna lower my offer when it gets to that point

Some batches of the 173gr were great. Depends on the actual date it was made. LC at one point sorted the bullets from each die that made them, those were great beacuse the dies werent exactly the same. To improve efficiency under new managment they started blending the bullets and accuracy went to shit. I forget the year when that happened. 70s IIRC... There are some online articles and american rifleman articles talking about this maybe 20 years ago.

1982 lot should be ok, I have some of that vintage and it shoots better than the later 118SB in my match m1a.

I wouldn't pay .75 per round you can load better ammo at that price range.

"82C" is 1982 March ("C" is the third letter in the alphabet like the month of March).
I have shot a lot of 82D and some 82B M118 ammo in gov't M14 Rifles and M1A's.
The 82D was consistently accurate and desired.

Thanks for replies everybody. So what do y’all think a fair price would be? I know y’all can’t see it in person just trying to get an idea

I've shot a lot thru a M1A with good accuracy,
not a clue what the lot number was,

still have a partial can in the ammo pile

completed auctions on gunbroker (Lake City M118 as the search) show
60 rounds (3 boxes) sold  for $48.50
a can of 460 sold $429.99

The Lot I have is 82A132-012 issued back in late 1990's, headstamp is LC-81 . Usually saved it for 600yd and 1000yd , shot 118SB at 2-300 yd.

Better than later issue M118SB loaded with ball powder in M80 Ball Case.

Figure what it would cost to load a duplicate per round and offer that.

Nosler 175 etc
40-41gr IMR 4895
