I was thinking today that we should have a thread dedicated to firearm related crates and containers. It’s just a matter of time before they’re pretty much all gone and it would be nice to have detailed pictures and measurements while they’re still available for documentation.

I always thought it would be cool to build replicas of some of the more useful examples, particularly a WWII footlocker. The only one I have at the moment is a 7.62x54 ammo crate, but since someone may be interested I can post measurements of it and detailed pics at some point. Does anyone else think this is a good idea, and if so could you contribute?

Good idea. I've been looking for a surplus crate to store all my kids airsoft stuff in. Contemplating making one if I can't find one.

I remember the old days of being able to buy 5 or so Mosins and getting the crate for free.  They had 'em stacked up at guns shows.

Fuck, I'm old.

Varusteleka and some other surplus sites occasionally have grenade boxes and similar on sale, but they're not exactly cheap, and I have seen rifle crates for a while.   Most of the milsurp imports coming out of Africa haven't seen a nice cozy wooden crate in half a century.

The wooden ammo crates are good too.  The crates that Czech Silver tip 7.62x54R and the Yugo 8mm and 7.62x39 are pretty neat.

Quite a few firms around that specialise in repro arms, ammo and ration crates, etc.

Aimed at the re-enactor market, so they can put on a public display with kit that looks like it should (factory fresh, not 6 or 7 decades old)
The repro boxes also mean that the genuine old examples are saved from further use & possible damage.
One of the good things with some new crates is that are completely correct externally, but in some cases you open them and they house an ice chest or storage locker or some other modern creature comfort.
Not only handy for living rough at events, but great for padding out a man cave or hiding stuff in plain sight

You can build your own ammo looking boxes in the exact size you need. Have not painted and stenciled this girl yet:

Very nice, I’d like to tackle a project like that.

Looks good. I actually built my own this weekend as well. Not a great photo, but I like how it turned out.

Some years ago I bought like 20 old shitty mosin stocks from Aim intending to turn ammo crates into end tables.
Just for legs.
Just never got around to doing it.

Glad you didn't do that, Mosin stocks bring decent money for those that need a replacement or need one for a restore job. I bought some of those 91/30 stocks back then as well, still have a couple kicking around waiting for a good restore project.

These were bought unusable.
No metal.
Cracks, splices that sort of thing.
I wouldn't cut something good enough to use for a stock.

Just worked on a couple the other day to "fix" the hinges/locks.  Gave one to my youngest son and will give the other to my nephew.

Neat boxes to store stuff in.
