My nephew just picked up an old Winchester 120 Ranger 12 gauge and is wanting to convert it to a self defense gun.   Will a model 1300 defender barrel and tube fit this gun?

Yes, a 1300 barrel will work. I bought one off the EE for my 120.

I spent about two hours on the phone, over the course of two days, with a guy who was trying to figure out a way to make his 120 barrel work with an 18" barrel from a 1200 or 1300.  He'd already had the barrel and receiver Cerakoted, so he didn't want to buy a new barrel, and couldn't figure out why using a Nordic mag extension to make up the distance between the barrel lug and the factory magazine, with the barrel clamp and the extension tube cap holding the barrel on.  After I explained to him why that was an Absolutely Terrible Idea, he didn't believe me and got all pissed off that I was just trying to get him to spend more money when he'd already sunk like $800 into this shotgun

If you need some measurements on anything, I have a 1300 Defender here. (Coastal Marine ver).

Read about how hard it is to change a winchester mag tube. I wouldn't want to do it unless I had to change the feed throat.
He can cut his barrel shorter. The army used 1200s with normal 4 round mags. I cut my barrel though and now I regret it and I'm finding used barrels cost more than a whole gun.
Honestly, look into the maverick 88 with 20" barrel and 8rnd mag for $200ish. Same control placement.
Eta: they make mag extensions for the winchester. If he must have a tactical winchester, just cut the barrel and buy a choate mag extension.

My $0.02 -

If the 120 runs without issue, cut the original barrel down to 18.5" and maybe cut an inch off the buttstock and be done with it. He can DIY and make it look pretty good with simple tools if he takes his time with it.

Pro-tip; When cutting down a barrel, especially for the first time, cut the barrel a little long and square-up the muzzle as a practice run before you commit yourself to closing in on that magical 18" mark.

After discussing things with my nephew we decided to go to a local gun show over the weekend where he found a nice used Defender at a good price.
Thanks everyone for all the help.

My 1300 and 120/1200s both run mini shells with no problem. Changing the mag tubes is not the most fun thing you can do but you can do it. I use a short piece of PVC pipe as a slide hammer. If any of you have 4 shot barrels you think you want to cut down let me know, I'll trade you for ones I got that were already cut down. I do have a few..........

The aluminum receiver Winchesters (120, 1200, 1300, 1400, etc) are good reliable shotguns and will last if you maintain them. I have one that the mag tube has an almost hourglass shape to it. That puppy has been shot a lot and is still going.......

Well that's good, now he can put all those parts on his shotgun.
I'm just joking. I knew a guy who had this beet up old car he wanted to restore, so he went out and bought another same model car that was already in real nice condition and said he was going to use it for parts to fix up his crapped out car.
