I need a recommendation for a smith to cutdown a couple of MR556 barrels? I have reached out to a couple of HK smiths and they will do it only as a part of whole 416 clone package.  I just want to have them cut and threaded not a clone make over.

Thanks!

Try reaching out to Nefarious Arms. Marv makes HK416 barrels.

Try class 3 machining. He is a member here. I think he also advertises in the EE.

Not familiar with OPs gun but Class 3 has done others for me, great work and low coast.

I’ve used Class 3 for other barrels, awesome work and quick turnaround, but I’m planning on getting an MR762 barrel sent to ADCO at some point, as I’ll also need the gas port opened up.

I had my mr556 barrel cut buy Adco to 10.5.   No issues act all.

ADCO, not really any different than any other AR barrel.

Gas block differences and gas port sizing are something you will need to take into account with shorter barrels though.

I'm gonna do one at 14.5" and one at 11.5".  I think the 11.5" will run fine with a standard car or maybe an H2 buffer.

ADCO didn't do the thread relief on the last barrel I sent them.

Mine 10.5 did not run with standard vented gas block.  I end up buying specific 10.5 inch barrel one.

Were you running an HK buffer/spring of standard CAR?

Don’t remember exactly but I think I tried lighter non HK buffers.  At the end of the day I ended up with 10.5 inch specific gas block

The 14.5 will probably be fine with the standard gas block, IIRC the short 416s have two different gas port sizes, one for the vented gas block and one for the non vented block. No idea about the A5 series, which have 11.5" barrels.

@firedog51d

I did, but I work for an ffl and the guy who did it did a great job, he is a friend of mine and one of our gunsmiths and was just starting out learning how to cut and thread barrels, so I figured I'd give him some work . He is a lot better now than he was 3 years ago lol. Personally I would go to Adco or even better yet Marvin Pitts as they can reprofile and take some unnecessary meat off the barrel, but they can be expensive and take some time. If you are interested in something more local let me know.

I had mine cut to about 11" just so I had a little more wiggle room for some suppressors. Works just fine and is almost visually identical to factory 10.4s. Also helps keep the vent on my gasblock from painting my can with carbon.

It was done by ADCO in Sylvenia in Ohio.  About 50 miles from me

I would just get a Nefarious Arms 10.4” barrel and sell your uncut 16” barrel elsewhere…

ADCO did mine and enlarged the gas port for me. I'm using a vented 10" gas block. I also have a Nefarious Arms barrel with the Norwegian adjustable gas block. Both work great.
