I have a 556 swat version that I haven’t shot in years, and it kind of bores me. Is there anything to make it more fun (cerakote/sbr), or should I just sell it? If so, how much should I list it for?

Looks like the below pic

Sell it.  If you SBR it, it won't be right because the barrel is supposed to increase in diameter before the flash hider.  Painting it will only decrease it's value.  GunBroker shows that it will sell for over $1,500.  Sell it and use that money for another toy. :)

You already own it. If making it an SBR would make it more interesting, I would do that. Chopping the barrel will be fine. The US guns had barrels that increased in diameter behind the threads. Swiss 552/553 do not. I have a 552 SBR that was made from an early 556 rifle. The gunsmith chopped the barrel down and threaded 1/2x28. It’s great. No issues.

If you still think you’ll be bored after SBR, I’d just sell it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m leaning towards selling it. Is it possible to replace the metal handrail with one of the more old-school plastic ones? If so, where would I find one?

To end up with something like this:

I'm sure it's possible, but Sig USA no longer sells parts for the 556 series rifles.  I'm not sure if the US and Swiss parts interchange.  Your best bet might be to trade parts with someone.

Good luck finding a set of those type hand guards... I tried to find a set for months for my SBR...
I ended up cutting a set of 551 hand guards with broken locking tabs and grafting them back together...

I have the MFI 3 prong flash hider for it if you do, for sale on the EE.

If 553 pistols are still available. Sell it to fund one.
I mean your money is losing value everyday anyway.

Sweet, some good ideas here. Guess I’ll have to make a decision at some point.

In the case of the short “commando” handguard sets the US and Swiss guns do not interchange. They are slightly different lengths.

You have to change the endcap to the Swiss one to get shorter handguard’s to fit. Got mine from a supply house in Switzerland. Gun Factory

Don’t suppress it, the gap where the receivers meet shoots gas right into your eyes

If you want to suppress a SIG 55X series, the best to do that with is a 556xi since they have a gas setting that is specifically for shooting suppressed.  Unfortunately, they are probably one of the harder models to find because SIG didn't make them very long before moving on to the MCX series.  At least in 5.56 it's rare.  Seems the 7.62x39 was much more common in the 556xi.

Way be someone modified the gas plug to include suppressed settings. Works pretty well.
