So i have just a classic Ruger 10/22, completely stock, nice little gun, honestly maybe shot it 3 times the entire time i've owned it. I figure since i've neckbearded god knows how many rounds of .22lr over the years it certainly wouldn't hurt to get a "nicer" .22lr rifle, something more precision route.

What are the options, just upgrade a Ruger action with a better barrel and trigger? I don't want to drop a ton of money into it because plenty of other calibers that will do whatever job i need done, just a sweet shooting little rig for laser beaming rodents

I have a 10/22 that started out as a 50th Anniversary edition, and now the receiver is the only part left that is factory Ruger. I installed a Volquartsen Ultralight barrel, CNC-machined bolt, and TG2000 trigger group. I put a Hogue Tactical thumbhole stock on it as well. It is a great shooting rifle.

I also have a completely stock CZ 455 Varmint in .22lr that will shoot just as accurately.

All said and done, I have probably have $800 worth of modifications into my 10/22, along with the initial $280 cost of the rifle. I got the CZ 455 on sale for $349. I like both rifles a lot, but for the money I think the CZ 455 is a great value.

If you already use 10/22 mags, the Ruger American Rimfire in standard, predator, or target and the Ruger Precision Rimfire share mags.

If looking for something cheaper the Savage MKII FV-SR are great shooters.

If you upgrade your trigger to a Brimstone intermediate, make sure all the screws on your gun are tight, and feed it quality ammo, you may discover your 10-22 will shoot a lot better than you think it will.

IMHO the 10/22 is the most over rated hunk of sh.....well we will leave it at that.

If you want a "nicer" 22 we have to ask a few questions.....automatic or bolt....or lever?

Lots of "better" rifles out there...and for not much more money then a NiB 10/22....and many will out shoot a pimped 10/22.

However if you want to play pretend gunsmith get yourself another 10-22

If you like the bolt like you linked...I would strongly suggest you look at the offerings of CZ and Savage....both much better guns.

I have a CZ, a couple Savages and several different stock and built 10/22's.

If you want a semi auto, the 10/22 is the best choice.

CZ is great quality with excellent accuracy out of the box. Savage is excellent accuracy for a budget price. CZ and Savage have some similar models but most offerings are very different. If both offer what you are looking for, I would recommend leaning towards the CZ for the better quality at a value price.

Or save some money and just buy a used Marlin; out the box most of them will outshoot most Ruger 10/22s and will hang with even fancier ones with upgrades.  They don't have the aftermarket support, you typically have to clean them a few rounds earlier and you'll need to replace the plastic buffer that'll eventually break but overall they're hard to beat for the price.  Oh and the Papoose, which Marlin came out with around 1990 or so, is still lighter and more accurate than the take down 10/22.  Don't get me wrong, my Ruger Target with it's mods is really nice to shoot from a bench but my old Model 60 will still hang with it (when I had a scope on it) and it's a lot lighter and easier to carry in the woods- and it's just more fun (it'll empty that tube really, really fast if you try ).

ETA- If you're looking for a gun that's just plain fun to shoot check out the Umarex MP5-22, not the GSG version.  CDNN used to run them on sale for like $299 but it looks like they're out right now.  Umarex's .22 version of the HK 416 is really fun as well.

Agree....i have 3 model 60's....two so old they do not have sn#'s.  When a group comes out to shoot one of those comes with me every time....and puts all the purple carbon pimp 10/22's to shame....no matter who is shooting it.

There is a reason the 10/22 has a huge aftermarket.....it needs it to make them shoot halfway well.

Ruger 77/22 is a nice rifle that uses the same mags as 10/22.

Agree the 10/22 is overrated, and the trigger sucks, even aftermarket is meh. If anyone came out with a high-cap mag capable 22 that ran well, it would sell. 10/22s have been out for 50+ years. We're waiting. I hate the fat rotary ruger mag head.

My Marlin 795 and 25rd promag have suited me well.  (some people have mixed results on the promags though)

CZ 452 or 453 are good bang for the buck in terms of precision shooting, you may be able to find them still.
