Do you think this is a good way to get a filmless tube for the price of a thin filmed one?

"Gen 3 Unfilmed White Phosphor L-3 Auto-Gated systems with 1 large spot in zone 3. Minimum signal to noise is 30, resolution 64. Tube data sheet is included with the unit."

I don't see a price on that page.

Thats pretty bad for unfilmed white phosphor L3 tube as far as resolution and SNR. I have not seen lower. Its not like you are getting the equivalent to a regular L3 unfilmed white phosphor with a spot on the edge, its a lower end tube overall. A filmed tube will be over 28 SNR and 64 lp minimum. Its just a white tube...

At $3,300.00 for that blem unit I'd rather buy a full on L3 for $500 more with small or no blems, SNR in mid 30s, 72lp, etc. but that is just me. What are the halo and EBI? Under 1 is good, over 1 is not so good for an L3 filmless. It matters on specifics. If you get under 1 EBI and Halo, 32 or 33 SNR, 64lp the blem might be worth it, and at 72lp it would be a no brainer.

@DevL How do you think these would compare to the TNVC thin film WP units for about the same price? I'm already stretching my budget for these I can't really swing another $500.

Thanks for the response. Your products might be just what I’m looking for! Will send an email regarding the current Blem WP units when funds allow.

I purchased a WP filmless pvs-14 from Matt at N-Vision. EBI was.4 and Halo is .7. Had the unit in hand in 2 days from purchase and the customer service was excellent. 10 year warranty doesn't hurt either

Ahh, I thought it was a one unit deal with those exact specs (the bare minimum). L3 filmless from TNVC is usually the 2000 series tube military or a 20UM tube. They also can get a 2200 series tube or an Aviator tube, or just pick a good one from their order that is like a 22UA tube, Military having B zone blems and Aviator having C zone only or no blems at all. I got a 72lp 33snr .8 EBI and .7 halo from TNVC. Its not really comparable to the Omni IV to Omni VII green tubes I have used in the past. If what you get is equivalent, Id buy all day for just a dark spot on the edge and saved money, though I doubt there are many 72lp tubes at that price. The quality of image, ability to not flare in bright light, not have a large bloom on laser points, the ability to read license plates even with reflective light is a huge difference with my L3 WP tube. I know some people who may be calling about one at that price.

Mine showed up Thursday and I'm happy with it. 64lpmm, EBI 0.8, HALO 0.7, SNR 33.2. One large blem (0.009-0.012in) on the inner edge of zone 3. I was going to buy a thin filmed unit before I saw these.

My original tube died on me after 2 hours of use. N-Vision was great and replaced it quickly. The new tube has some nice specs: 33.8 SNR and 72 lpmm. The blem is small and on the outer edge of zone 2 and there is some slight shading on one side. It was definitely worth it and I would buy again if I needed a second one.

@mach

I posted my second unit above. Here is one from my first one which had an issue and N-Vision replaced.

That is a large blem? That isn't bad at all. If you ever plan to bino this device, that would not be an optimal tube, but as a monocular, it probably works pretty darn great. I've had tubes with shading, and they never really bothered me as long as it was minimal.

Going to order one myself this AM. 33.9 SNR, 64 lp/mm resolution, .8 EBI, .7 Halo, 2485 PS. Hopefully mine doesn't die on me in a few weeks though.

Is that fairly normal??
Link Posted: 10/9/2018 11:14:00 AM EDT
no, it is not normal for a new tube to die, since they typically have a burn-in period to test against that.

Good to know, thanks! Just placed my order

I don't know what went wrong with my first tube. It worked great and had a very clean image except for the blem for a few hours. It started to develop a bright spot on the edge which slowly grew in size and intensity until it looked like and was about the size of a half moon. Then the tube went dark and the only thing you could see was the white spot when turned on.

Here is a pic of the white spot not long before it went dark:

Did they say what caused it? Is it recoil related? Bad potting? Wondering if it is related to the tube, the install, or happened from use.

Those are some great specs too BTW.

That was a nasty emission point ! :( Would have been some aluminium flaked from the screen most likely.

Note the size of the halo.... That's a good indicator which side of the MCP the EP existed.
