Junglas 1 or 2, or BK-9. Unless a Kukri is a possibility.

Rowen makes ESEE knives (not all of them some are through other makers). Some of Ontario's knives are ESEE designs but do not carry the name.

I found a like new Junglas on the EE here for $75 with no sheath a few years ago.  There maybe some similar deals if you keep a look out.  Its going to be very hard to find a made in USA chopper for $100.00.  If you don't mind foreign made (made in Brazil), the Tramontina machetes are great blades for the money, might want to check them out.  They are perfect for clearing brush, super sharp and affordable.

Becker BK9 all the way and it's right around your price point.

I have the full size ESEE junglass as well. It's heavier and more expensive than the BK9 and I dont care for the handles.

Depends on what you're clearing out too. A machete is great unless you have to swing into something with thorns. For that kind of stuff one of those long handled brush choppers is better. If it's going to be a lot of chopping a hatchet or small axe might be better.

I second the Kukri option. Aside from being S. American produced(El Salvador), The Condor K-Tac Kukri might be a winner. I grabbed the "Desert" model with the natural canvas micarta handles and Tan Kydex sheath. They are about $125. I though the dangler/sheath attachment was crap so, I dug a couple of "Pull-the-dot" straps out of my holster leftovers and rigged up a way to carry it in kind of a crossdraw position on my left hip.

El Salvador is in Central America.

You can get different scales for the BK9 but it will cost another $50 or so. I have that and a Junglas 2. Frankly I can't decide which is better. Each have their strengths. If you're looking for a pure chopper and nothing else the BK9 is probably better. The Junglas 2 isn't as good at chopping but it does handle other tasks better.

If he likes the Junglas he should check out the Ontatio RTAK II...both came from the Livesay LAK-5. RTAK is around $100.

Ontario and ESEE are would be almost be apples to apples if it weren't for the ESEE warranty.

That one looks good. But it was OOS the day I went to SMKW.
If I get the chance to hold one I may jump on it

It's virtually the same as the Junglas but it doesn't have the no questions asked warranty.

I purchased one with the new contoured micarta handles a couple months back. Meh...I'm not totally convinced of it's usefulness. A good axe and an ESEE 4 are a much more useful option. I've only used mine in the kitchen and to widdle some tinder from some hard maple. Too long and ungainly. Too thick for fine slicing. Too heavy to carry around (for a knife). Too light to do any real chopping work.
