These stay in car all the time? Let's say, in lieu of an ar style pistol?

This.  I have a local Sheriff's Dept trade-in 870.  She ain't pretty, but she'll get the job done.

one of the ideas for a truck gun I looked at was a Shockwave ... added a 5 round side saddle....a sling swivel to the birds head grip for a 1" nylon adjustable hand loop, but decided on a Recover Tactical brace for a red dot G17.3... there is a pretty interesting video on Forgotten Weapons with a novel shooting style... the video shows a similar grip strap to what I made, and I might re visit it as an option with a red dot mounted as in the video

I don't leave a gun in the truck but I toss my 18" H&R 20ga single shot in there when I'm headed to my buddy's farm to work (rides on the tractors with me) and it's been on lots of camping trips.  Sometimes I carry a Mossberg 500 12ga camping instead, sometimes a rifle.

I don't leave guns in the truck but if I did it would probably just be an AR. If I did keep a shotgun in the truck it would be an auto of some sort(either Benelli M2 or Beretta 1301) loaded with slugs and some birdshot on standby for rodent control.

A well used M500 that I paid $150. I detail stripped it, replaced the mag tube spring, cut the barrel back to 18.25” cut the LOP to ~12.5” and ran a couple hundred rounds of bird/buck/slug before I would bet my life on it.

It rests, hidden under the rear seats along with a bandolier of various loads. The tube is loaded with Buckshot.

The gun comes OUT of my car if it is ever parked, unattended in an unsecured location overnight.

if I lived rurally, sure. a 500/590/88/or 870 would be great for anything between 2 and 4 legged problems and birds. But here near the city I'm not worried about anything on 4 legs.

I have a center console vault between my two front seats.  Have not figured out how to get my shotgun in there but when I do it will be a "870 magnum" police retread.
