I have had a 32 win special for 40+ years, haven't used it in 30+ years.  It was my first rifle so I figured I would blow the dust off it for deer season.

Got  about 75 pieces of brass for it.  Mixture of FC, Rem, WW.

Looked at 2 load recipes, one said trim length is 2.030 the other 2.035 so no big deal.

Measured my brass before starting.  I have brass from 1.99 to 2.045 in length with most (65) of them being right at 2.020.

So what to do?

Toss short ones, cut rest to 2.020?  or is that too short?

My gauge would be, if a bullet is loaded into the brass, can it be seated correctly and to an acceptable overall length.

Then figure out if that impacts your case volume.

Sounds like this was all working before, so I would just run what you have.

I ended up trimming 74 of them to 2.020.

Had another 16 that was 2.0-2.010  all FC cases. They will be out in the SHTF box of stuff.

I was able to get Hornady FTX 165 grain bullets for $45 per 100 shipped.

I suspect they will be closer to the 2.030 once fired.

In precision rifles, neck length and neck tension affect the extreme velocity spread, and therefore accuracy.  However, the 32 Winchester special is far from a precision rifle, so it is unlikely you would notice the difference in velocity and accuracy.

I would trim any cases over the maximum length and load them up.  The difference in extreme velocity spread caused by case length and/or neck tension with once fired cases for that cartridge wouldn't be enough to get worked up over.

Yeah that's what I figured.

I will only be using it to shoot at a deer no more then 75 yards.  Not to mention using open sights and my old eyes.

It's kind of like throwing a softball.

So 2.20" is the minimum for 32 special ? OP is GTG

I would trim the long ones as suggested above.

Keep the short ones separate and load them up. They should grow a bit. Next time you may be able to load them again without or just minimal trimming.

There is plenty of neck there, even if you have to trim some back to 2.000".  Unless you are crimping it won't matter and they will eventually grow longer.
