M1A, mini 14, etc. this is what I’m talking about.

What exists out there that uses either standard AR mags or AK mags? I don’t know why but I really want something that fits this niche. I think some company made a version that took AR mags and uppers but really wanting something with a wood stock, like sks but with AK mags. I know those were made too but in small numbers.

So what’s out there?

That’s probably going to be my best bet, I like the walnut with the mlok hand guard.

I wish ruger would make mini 30 again but with ak mags. I’ve got a boat load of x39 ammo I’d like more guns to use the mags/ammo I already have.

I have a set of Mossberg MVP Patrols (one in 7.62 the other is 5.56).  Bolt actions that take AR mags.  One in 7.62the other is 5.56.  Great shooting guns.  They have wooden stocks but painted black.

Looking more for semi autos but these aren’t a bad suggestion.

Yeah trying to avoid getting into oddball calibers and proprietary mags. Good chance what I seek is just not really a thing outside of the fight lite one posted earlier. Just figured if it did exist someone here would know about it.

Browning BAR

Options for 10rnd and smaller capacity mags still just clip in the door as a way to hold them in.

Older Remington hunting semi-autos, too.  740, 742 and pumps like 760.  All used detachable metal box magazines.  Not AR or AK, though.

I have a bunch of 740 and 742 rifles in multiple calibers.  This 742 is one, in .308.  Magazine holds 4 rounds. A few companies tried making extended 10 rounders, usually cheap plastic.  None functioned reliably.   The OEM metal ones always work with 100% reliability in all of mine.

I thought FN or somebody made a traditional style semiauto that took AR mags?  Haven’t seen any discussion of them for years so maybe discontinued.

Litefight rifle looks really good. Is that using a piston and if so is it compatible with any other piston system parts?  Otherwise they came up with a really cool flex-buffer design! Lol

VEPRs mostly came with thumbhole stocks.

Also you could always put SVD style furniture on almost any AK.

I was going to suggest the FNAR but it's only available in .308.  They use AR10 mags IIRC but don't look anything like an AR but the stock is synthetic, not wood.  I'd kind of like to have one myself.  The BAR has wood stocks but I think it uses proprietary mags (I could be wrong on that though).

FNAR uses proprietary EXPENSIVE mags. Also a lot more similar to the BAR (commercial, not WW2) than any military type rifle.

There's the Remington 7615, a pump action 223 that takes AR mags. Was offered briefly as a transition type thing for keeping same manual-of-arms as the 870 and still use AR mags and be a carbine for duty use by cops.

I'm still intrigued by the ARES/Fightlight SCR.  Kinda really want one.  Use a NFA/Gibbz side charging upper.  Only tricky part is hand guards, all of the ones pictured on their uppers don't look right with the fudd bottom half/back end.

The norinco hunter and sks-m fit the bill the closest for ak mags for sure. I’ll have to keeping an eye out on gunbroker for one of either.

What are those worth in a sane market?

The 7400 can be had in .308 and 30-06 along with several other easy to find calibers like .243.
These things are everywhere and are relatively inexpensive.
I bought one in 30-06 off a guy for $50 because he couldn't figure out why it stopped working. (He never once cleaned it)

The FN 49 can be had in 30-06 with a 20 round mag.
They can also be found in 8mm Mauser.

You're looking at a proprietary magazine with few exceptions.

Almost bought a Hunter for $800 Jan 2020.

The "problem" is they are milled AKs that just so happen to be perfectly set up to allow people to duplicate a Galil off of them... so a lot of 'em have been bought up and converted.

Right before things went crazy I think you could find an SKS-M for $600-$700, and Norinco Hunter for $750–$850

Also, the common 8mm FN49 doesn’t use a detachable mag, it’s a top loader. Like an oversized SKS.

There was some company that built Winfield jungle carbines in 7.62X39 that took AK mags and they parked them light grey and put decent walnut stocks on them. I had a chance to buy one for cheap but was broke at the time. Australian international arms I think they were called.

This might be a bit of a stretch for the OP, but Volquartsen makes semi auto .22 Magnum rifles that use the Ruger .22 Magnum mags. You can get 15 round mags now.

Some really nice firearms in this thread but a lot of these are examples most of us will never see for real.

For something you might actually find, I think the Mini 14/30 or SKS is your best bet.

AK mag version SKSs aren’t plentiful, but they’re very practical with the fixed 10 round mag & strippers. Or removable Tapco 20 round mags if you can still find them.

An unmodified Saiga or one opened up for AK mags is my favorite option but the few unmodified Saiga I see these days fetch as much as a fully converted one.

I wouldn’t discount a bolt action AR mag Ruger Ranch/American, I have em in .300bo & 6.5 Grendel. When you find em they’re not as ridiculously overpriced as ARs or AKs these days. I also have a Mini 14 in .300bo, other than obscenely priced ammo these days it’s a great platform
