That is the question. I got this guy cheap, and I was going to let it have a date with the bandsaw, but it might me too nice.

Would you cut this guy to 18.5?

I have been looking for one of those

If it were mine it would be chopped at the mag tube.

They've started to command stupid prices. This one is a Western Field. The store brands seem to cheaper.

Chopping at the mag tube will be close to -4", I'd wager.

I'd cut it for sure.

Got a cheap 20" Maverick 88. Sold the barrel and mag tube, and bought a shorter barrel and mag tube for a profit of $100.

Before you chop, mark the location for the new bead sight. It is easier that way. Use a thread or fine string around the original bead and pull it back to the receiver. Make sure it is centered at both ends then center punch a drill spot a half inch or so behind where you will cut it off. Beads and taps are cheap. I prefer the slightly larger silver bead that is available.

LGS has one for sale for $150 in about the same condition, but I have no need for one anymore so I passed...

Chop it. I have several. Good shotguns. The store branded models have limited value.

What are we looking at here and why is it cool?  I'm not recognizing this gun or historical reference for some reason. Looks familiar but I can't place it.  Trench gun?

This is the store brand of a Stevens 520. Some were used as trench guns. It's a Browning design.

This was my first. Ward's Westnern Field marked SB60A though identical to a Stevens 620A. I keep it in a Skinner's sights bag. Just over 20" long folded and doesn't scream gun when taking to or from a vehicle. Very convenient for hotel travel.

Most sellers don't recognize them as a takedown. The early models have the safety in the trigger guard. I prefer the 620A or the 520-30 that has a tang safety like a Mossberg. I have bought a few for less than $200.

These can also make fairly inexpensive trench gun clones with the addition of a heat shield from Numrich, Sarco, or the like. Unfortunately, that does add a lot of weight.

This started as less than $200. Had to buy some more parts though. Probably $245 or so by now.

Mine has the suicide safety.

Cut my Western Field to 20.5” as a trench gun option. No Montgomery Ward or model # engravings, unlike all the net pics I’ve come across with both.

I’d chop it. It’s not pristine or in high demand as a long barrel.

FYI, it's chopped to 18.5. It's in pieces, or I'd post a pic.

I threw it back together to test fire it, and it looks like I need to work on the shell stop, as the shells kept jamming up the gun.

Worse, it wouldn't even fire.  Doing some troubleshooting, it turns out the firing pin is broken.

This is becoming an expensive project.

This would be my preference as well (unless you're cloning a trench gun).

If I was keeping it Title I then I'd chop it at 18.01" since it has to be less than 18" to be a SBS.
18.5" is playing it too safe, unless you just prefer that length for some reason.

No kidding!  None of the holes I've ever drilled were dead center.
