Simple question, which do you prefer?
I admit, I'm torn.  Most of my knives historically, that I clip into my pocket, have been tip down.  Lately, I've been carrying tip up when given a choice with the knife.
I can see advantages to either mode of carry.  Most of my pocket knives are Spyderco brand, fwiw.
Tip down puts the Spydie hole close to my thumb when drawing it out of my pocket, but I have to shift my grip after opening.
Tip Up also can put the hole close to my thumb when drawing but I have to reach for it.  The upside is the grip is closer to just closing my hand onto it after opening.

So, which do you prefer?

I've never really thought about this. My Emerson is tip up however. That's how it came and with the wave feature it deploys itself. This is what I carry the most.

Tip up.
No question.

Depends on knife I guess. Cheap ass knives I wouldn't trust to have tip up.  Spyderco is always tip up for me.

Most knives are tip up now because of flippers. Typically it was a good move regardless. Better placement when deploying and is a good safety measure to keep the blade from opening in your pocket.

I've switched to OTF's though, so tip down is the way.

Tip down, easier to draw and deploy with the pivot already between your thumb and forefinger. No need for gimmicks like the “Wave” feature either.  Knife naturally ends up in your palm without the need to choke up too. You also aren’t reaching down into your pocket since you are grabbing the knife by the pivot.

Wave isnt a "gimmick", it works to deploy the knife quickly and naturally in the hand.
Your choice as to which is better for you (tip up or down), but the wave works.
Period.
Numerous other manufacturers have paid for the privilege of using the wave on their blades...if it was just a gimmick, it would have made financial sense to do so.

Its a function of knife size.

4" blade Spyderco Police / Military / Endura? Tip Down

2-3" blade Delica / Dragonfly, etc? Tip up.

I live in a state where autos are legal, so my Kershaw auto is tip up.

I’ve carried both ways & simply adjust, so, it doesn’t matter.

But, i started carrying when a Schrade LB7 or Buck 110 with “biker’s flip” or a a Balisong was the norm, back in the 1970s.
