This thread on 9mm can got me thinking on 556 cans.
Whats the current best option on the inexpensive cans for potentially pin welding on a 556 (for a single stamp gun)? I agree, best and inexpensive don't go together. Perhaps think of the word best as in best in the under $500 category (street price). I think the Delta Brevis is probably the best of the best in the short category, but its right around $1200. I was looking at the Gemtech Trek 2 for $300, and then the Griffin GP5 for $495. The Gemtech will need. 11.5 inch barrel and the Griffin goes on a 10.5 inch barrel. Both are exceptionally similar. Those are the only two I see in the under $500 Thoughts on either? I don't want another SBR or pistol lower. I have them. This time I want a one stamp gun. Build it and run it. |

Seems a lot of the newer cans have swappable mounting systems that wouldn't work for your application. I'd probably go with the Trek.

Griffin GP5 would be a good pick.
Sure seems like it would be a hassle to clean the barrel with a suppressor permanently mounted to the barrel. In reality you're not saving much money after you pay some one for the pin and weld. |

Quoted: By that do you mean the can be unthreaded at the level of the mounting system, thus negating the pin weld? I think the Griffin is exactly like the Trek in that regard. View Quote |

I’d look hard at the direct thread Saker 5.56 I’ve seen being sold for $325 (I think).

This is a good deal that fits your criteria too. ETA: He beat me to it... ^^^^^^^^ |

If you don't mind the weight, this is exactly what the TBAC Takedown 5.56 was meant for, and it's well under $500.

Thanks all!
So out of those 4 choices, what would be the top 2? Prices are similar, dimensions are similar, reputation of manufacturers are similar (and excellent). They all seem to pretty much the same to me. Any personal experience on why you’d get one over another? I have a couple of Sakers so I know about the weight. The fixed saker and Gemtech are certainly cheaper. I have 2 uppers in mind currently. I have a 10.5 and a 11.5 (just the barrel right now). I’d get the suppressors for them. Both with NON adjustable F gas blocks. I can use an adjustable carrier though. |

I thought the trek was good down to a 10.5 barrel. Pretty sure this is what one of the people from gemtech said that used to post on here.

My innovative arms grunt mini is pretty nice. Haa wrench flats. Probably need about an 11.5 is maybe 12 inch barrel to meet 16 inches.

Don’t pin and weld or silver solder. PITA to remove. Did it with a trek. Great can but just do the SBR or pistol. Especially with eforms so fast now.

Anything that can swap mounting systems (Dead Air, Q, Silencerco) would have to be welded at every threaded joint to be counted for overall length. I'm not familiar with the Griffin, but I know the Trek is solid front to back, so it should work well for you. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Now it’s just a matter of which one to get. The Trek allegedly weighs 17ish oz and the Griffin is 12ish oz. Remaining specs are virtually identical.

Haven't handled that particular can, but Griffin makes nice stuff.

I have a cheap Trek. I’d get another at the price I paid. I doubt you can make a bad decision amongst those choices.
ETA: I’ve personally been talking myself out of the Saker from Unbranded. (Fiscal priorities) |

If the HPA had passed there would have been gigantic threads on pin and weld Form 1 cans for zero stamp guns. Oh well.
If you do the P/W yourself the economics aren't too bad. If some one combined the lightness of the Griffin with the baffle access of the TBAC that would be a nice set-up. I can also envision a reflex design that could be permanent, but reflex designs have fallen out if favor for more easily swappable muzzle cans. Have fun with it. |

Sig SRD556 (direct thread steel version) has been a great balance of weight, performance, length, cost for me and can be easily found for less than $500.

This thread has me thinking that I want to pin and weld a .30 cal can on a bolt action .308 for a suppressed hunting rifle that can cross state lines without permission.

Mentioned earlier. From all accounts it’s an excellent can with a great feature set. Given the socom criteria, that suppressor is also 27 ounces. More than twice the weight of the Griffin. I do not require a socom approved suppressor. 27 oz at the end of a 11 inch barrel would suck for me.

I bought a Griffin GP-5 and a GP-7. Price, reputation, reviews were perfect for this application.
Thanks. |

our 556 TD is heavy but balances a 10.5 perfect making it extremely shootable. And it can be pinned but still get to baffles for rotation and change as needed.
