I have a USC/UMP converted by TommyBuilt.

I love it but it's kind of unwieldy and difficult to find a discrete case that houses it loaded while also not looking like a high dollar item.(e.g. lap top bags) It's nearly the size of my 10.5 LMT. Also, it's the last gun I have chambered in 45 as I have moved completely to 9mm in all my carry guns. I'm down to like 150ish rounds of 45, less than 50 of those are self defense rounds. That's what has precipitated me kicking this idea around.

I had wanted a UMP since I was in high school and saw Bad Boys 2 in the theater. So there is some nostalgia there. It is SBRd and that would be a pain in the dick to deal with. So those are checks in the "keep" column.

The nostalgia and HK goodness are the main reasons for the purchase, with a plan to use it as a HD gun. Unfortunately, I haven't found a light solution that I like that could've brought it into a home defense role so it got relegated to a range toy. Now it's become a safe queen because of my unwillingness to buy 45 opting for buying 9 and 5.56.

I know I can throw a 9mm barrel in and get new mags. But then I get the advantage of ammo commonality of the SP5K without any of the size benefits. Then I'm also spending extra funds on a barrel that could go towards ammo. (if it ever restocks)

I'm having a little crisis of conscience about this because I do love it and have said I'd never sell it. I love the thing, I love looking at it, I love pulling it out when I'm watching The Town. But that's kind of all it gets used for, finger banging and IG posts. Anke has turned into an insta-thot!?

I try not to make decisions while go up hill, and I feel like the ammo crisis and impending political fallout/fight constitutes "up hill."

Just looking for general input.

Get the SP5K first.  Shoot them both side by side.  Then decide.

Sell it to me.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Where the heck do you plan on finding an SP5K

Don't ever get rid of a gun, OP.  Especially something like this.

Personally, I never was a fan of the UMP, never intrigued me in the slightest. I’m way more of an HK MP5 person and have several of them. BUT I can completely relate to the fact that you love it. As a rule of thumb, I NEVER sell a gun that l “love” whether it ever goes to the range or not or gets used is irrelevant. I have a Colt SP1 that hasn’t been used in many years and wouldn’t be in my top 10 guns I’d grab out of my safe in a SHTF situation. But it was my 1st love as a kid in the realm of “tactical/military” guns, so I’ll most likely leave this earth with that gun sitting in my safe, because I love it.
On the flip side, I’d sell an UMP in a split second to acquire an SP5K PDW, but I have no emotional connection to an UMP.
One warning about HK roller locks, is once you own and shoot it, you start getting it  out and fondling it every time Die Hard is on TV,  then you start telling your wife what a “good investment” a FA sear would be, then you find out if she loves you.....lol

Yea, 100% do it.  I got rid of my USC/UMP this year.  Same as you, fingerbanged around the house but never shot it.  I put that money into an HK94 that's now an MP5SD.  I don't regret it for a second.

For shooting the roller locks are light years better.  If you don't already have a full size MP5 I'd go with that first but the K is great.

Unless your really hurting for cash I don't see the point to selling. As long as you like it keep it.

I had a USC/UMP conversion for a while. It was the cool flavor of the month for a while, then I got bored with it. Converted to 9mm, sold all the .45 mags, bought a bunch of 9mm and it was the cool flavor of the month again. After a while it just sat in the corner of the safe. Way cool to look at, but not near as smooth as the roller lock guns. It took a while to convince myself to sell it, but I finally did. I don't miss it.

I'd keep it, especially as it's an NFA item. Even if it's not your favorite now, maybe it'll grow on you again in time. I go through phases where I'm super into something, it falls out of favor, and then I circle back around again.

I see what you did there. If he follows your advice, he’ll own an SP5K, or better yet, an SP5, and will be sending that blowback .45 down the road. Sneaky...

Figure it's as good a time as any for some SP5K porn.

Keep the UMP SBR and get the new SP5K. I never regretted keeping a gun yet always regretted selling them off.

I think you will regret your loss later.  The Roller locks are better shooting guns, but UMPs by Tommy Built, are a near custom build you will regret losing later.

You can always sell it later.

If you can only afford one... sell it and get the SP5. IF you can afford to keep it and get the SP5... KEEP IT and convert the UMP to 9mm. Also guys please stop all the blasphemy down talking the UMP's.

The only thing worse than a UMP is a 9mm UMP.  Especially once you have shot a 9mm roller lock.  Talk about disappointment.

Not to mention the scarcity and cost of a German 9mm kit. You could buy an SP5K for what they cost.

I love my SP5k. I had TSC add the paddle mag release and clip&pin a 4-pos trigger housing for use with my registered sear pack. I have both an RCM full-auto bolt and my original SP5k bolt welded and machined to FA profile.

The gun runs flawless with both the original 0,1 trigger and the registered sear pack.

I wanted a true “k” profile (not a PDW) so no threaded barrel or 3-lug. I often shoot it with only the rear sling point (again, true “k”) but also with an SB brace.

Nothing is compelling me to replace it with a UMP or anything else.

However I do already have an MP5-navy, MP5 “French” and G3 profiled hosts.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm still a little torn but leaning towards switching.

Unfortunately, it's one of the other.

I need to look at what goes into selling a NFA gun. NFA is such dildos!

I have a UMP45 and could not bring myself to sell it, especially after setting it up with a 3-Lug suppressor. To me the UMP45 and the MP5 are the two mandatory keepers.

If you decide to sell it, an in-state sale would be less headache.

Had access to an UMP at work and shot it plenty of times. Meh. Heavy bolt created a lot of rise on full auto. Plastic everything else. I was not sad to see it finally go away.

I've never had the opportunity to shoot a select fire version, but have also heard that it's a bit hard to keep all shots on center mass in full auto, at least without a suppressor. But I've also heard that those with lowers set up for 2-round burst are good to go. I know that fast double taps with mine are easy to keep on target.

Regardless, the UMP45 is definately not for everyone. But if you have one and at least somewhat like it, I still say keep it and save up for the SP5. That's my master plan. Hopefully the inflated prices come back down to MSRP in 6 months.

Sell it as title I.  Put a fake suppressor on it, permanently attached.  No need to bother the ATF with anything, and sell.  By something roller-locky.

No, the easy play is to sell it with a USC barrel.  No reason to mess around with a permanent suppressor.  USC/UMP barrel is quick change.

OP can sell his short barrel separate and make even more off that.

I'm in the same boat as OP at the moment. Have a Tommy built UMP sitting around and never shoot it. Can I ask those that had a UMP and sold it, ballpark, how much did you get for an SBR'd UMP clone?

I have a few MP5s including an SD clone a Sp5k and an SP 89 as well as a UMP clone. The MP5s are absolutely better guns and it’s not even close. I will say my UMP is absolutely 100% reliable and it is the gun I grab when I hear strange noises in the night. I couldn’t imagine selling it but that’s because is SBR’d and selling such things is a PITA.

Keep the UMP if it makes you happy and get the MP5.

The MP5 is special.  It’s still around for a reason.

I’m kicking myself for not buying an SD a few years ago when they were somewhat available.  I’ll pounce on the next one I see.  I’ve emotionally prepared my wallet
