I received my Chinese manufactured bipod which is patterned after the Atlas design. These are not sold as "Atlas", but as "Green Blob" although I have no idea about the name. I know some oppose using foreign products but I got over that long ago as a ham radio enthusiast.
Ok, it isn't perfect. I found out that the pivot/swivel function felt rough and jerky plus with no swivel stop it would turn completely around.
So, I took it apart and saw that the cup that allows the pivot and swivel was machined a little rough. I took a brass washer and formed it to the cup as a bearing and voila it is smooth. This was easy to do by just crushing it to a perfect fit in the vise with very little pressure.
It has no swivel stop so the bipod will spin all the way around which is not desirable. So I drilled/tapped two holes and installed two allen head cap screws with rubber tube over the exposed threads to limit the swivel travel to just a few degrees.
I took a little aluminum off the inside of the rail clamp to allow a little tighter fit.
These little modifications to me are acceptable at this price and it does not bother me as I am a tinkerer. If you want a perfect out of the box version of this, the real Atlas I am sure is a fantastic product.
This bipod design is by definition "loose" on purpose compared to a Harris style. The idea is that by being able to move a little the rifle will be able to recoil smoothly and not jerk due to bipod feet moving. This one appears to allow this movement.
I like that it folds to the rear as well as to the front.
I like it has five positions for the leg angle.
I like that it tilts a few degrees to allow leveling the reticle on uneven ground.
I like that it swivels a couple of degrees to engage a different target without moving the feet.
I like that tilt and swivel can be tightened up to where you like with the knurled knob.
I like that it has leg notches.
Is it an Atlas quality product? Of course not, it is 1/10th the price.
Is it servicable? It appears so, time will tell. For $29.95 shipped...I think it's great.
