Use the fastest burning powder and lightest bullet that you can. Keep velocity below 1000fps.

I’ve gotten lazy with my reloading lately so I bought a box of the black butterfly 350gr subs to try on hogs. I only shot a few to check zero and they were subsonic and reasonably quiet out of my 18” barrel with a hybrid.

With my Marlin GG 12 grains of Unique got me 1067 fps with a 405 gr cast bullet and 1118 fps with a 350 gr cast bullet.

Hodgdon Trailboss or Vihtavuori N32C (Tin Star) are both excellent sub-sonic 45/70 powders. Pick the bullet you like, I would go heavy, and work it down so you don't stick a bullet in the barrel. I used Tin Star to make a very nice 405gr sub-sonic load for my 450 Bushmaster. With 45/70 having a greater case capacity you can probably use Trailboss. I ran out of case volume in 450 Bushmaster with Trailboss under a 405gr. It probably would work nicely with a ~350gr bullet.

Sorry, spaced the suppressor part. If plated bullets would work it looks like X-treme has .458-300 RNFP that would probably work for light .45-70 loads and Berry's has a 350 gr bullet specifically for the .45-70.

Not as dirty as plain lead, but still very dirty. I would never put hi-tek through any of my silencers that can't be taken apart. |

I use 13 gr of trailboss under a 405 gr projectile for subsonic use.
For the slower loads look at the load data for a trap door. |

I like unique better than trail boss, if you can find manuals from the 70's they are listed. The best book to get is 40 years with the 45-70 available on amazon. Its like the 45-70 bible and talks a lot about reduced and subsonic loads with unique.

Noebulletmolds.com recently made a mold for 500 and 600gr bullets that have a short enough nose to work in leverguns. Here is the 600gr mold: http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/index.php?cPath=42_588 Another option is to cut your cases shorter to fit an existing bullet to the crimp groove. Downside is the brass is only good for that bullet and it will leave a carbon ring like shooting special ammo in a 357/44 magnum. You'll also have to make up your own load data from scratch which may or may not be a big deal for you. ETA: I've chased the heaviest subsonic bullets possible in 44mag and 45 colt. I got a 1895 only because it has a fast twist and heavier bullets are available. It's a losing battle - I shoot my cheap Rossi 92 most often now because it holds more rounds, is lighter, is cheaper to shoot, quieter due to lighter bullets, and overall more fun. Unless you really have a need for super heavy subsonic ammo I'd just stick with the cheapest jacketed bullets you can find. Shooting subsonic rounds at the range it doesn't make a difference what the bullets weigh and if you're hunting a jacketed pistol bullet will perform better on an animal. |

I use Trailboss under a home cast 350 for my soft and quiet loads. While I am not using a suppressor, with my ear plugs in, the berm smack is louder that the report up close.
