If I need to take it out to put stuff in the bag I clip it to the backpack with a carabiner. I have a TT MOLLE nod pouch connected to outside of backpack.

I've had helmets that were only secured by the chinstrap swing around when crouching, bending down, etc. and punch me in the side of the head as well as get snagged or hung up on stuff. Very annoying

The AWS assault pack is a nice helmet carrying day pack, basically clones of the Eagle Yote pack.

The regular one has MOLLE all over the main pack body and the helmet carrier part zips on the main body so it's removable if not needed.

The Type II is cheaper and a bit simplified, no MOLLE webbing on the face of the main compartment and the helmet carrier is sewn on.
