Any suggestions? Which powders do you use, BP or Smokeless powder?

I'm useing a Lee 459 dia 405 grain bullet mold.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I have a few books that list several powders for the old Trapdoors, but I'm not sure about smokeless.

Slug the barrel. Bore diameters vary. You may need to upsize your bullet.
I use only Holy Black.

Yeah, I know. Not a lot of powders coming in around here. That's why I was asking about other smokeless powders being safe for a trapdoor.

Ive been loading IMR 4198 with powder coated 405gr hollow base bullets on mine.

I dont remember the charge weight off the top of my head, but  I was running under the max for some soft shooting loads. I have had no problems and its great to shoot. I dont know how accurate it is, but that is on the list to check.

Thank you.

I don't care too much about accuracy, I plan on using it as a fun Independence Day blaster.

Thanks man!

Just picked up a Marlin Trapper since I had the Hybrid 46 in the safe. I have 1 can of trailboss but looks like it may have been made in the plant that burned down. Its my go to for subs of all calibers. I have a lot of casting stuff so may want to cast with some of the Lyman molds I have. I have a lot of 2400, 4227, RL7 and need to find some Unique. I also have a stack of trap doors I can load for.

Pure lead cast 405 grain bullet covered in lube sitting on top of up to 70 grains of Swiss Fg or 1.5Fg is what I usually shoot.  You can adjust the charge to be lighter for plinking, just add cornmeal as a filler.

Real black powder makes a better 4th of July boom than smokeless, btw.

I believe you are 100% historically accurate Sir. BP it shall be.

Thanks all for helping. I'll play with a few smokeless choices, but shoot BP for the holidays.

I don’t like Trailboss and use 3031 instead.

I have measured bore up to 462I think they made them large for the BP they were useing
Use a soft lead bullet that will bump up  to the larger bore size  with black
