1/Dec/2019 Update: Might as well turn this into a 203/GL thread

Colt M4A1 Block 1 sbr + Colt M203 40mm grenade launcher with 9" barrel ??

Original thread title and content below:

Title: Helps on Form 1 M203

Hi! I'm trying to build the M4A1/M203 I carried in the Marines and I've never Form 1 a grenade launcher before (plenty of SBR and SBS tho) so if anyone here with approved F1 or F4 that can help me out it would be greatly appreciated!

Here are my questions:

1. Can I e Form 1 the receiver?

2. If yes, what is the "Type" that people with approved Form 1 put down; "Destructive Device" or "Grenade Launcher"?

3. "Caliber" would be "40mm" right?

4. *See pic below first* The model on my receiver has a "space" between "M" and "203"; do I put down "M 203" or "M203"? I'm asking because I have had examiners who wanted exactly what is engraved on the item that's being registered.

5. *See pic below first* Same question as above; there's a space in between the serial number; what do I put down, space or no space?

6. I'm planning on buying the 9" barrel once approved; I put down "9" for barrel length right? What about overall length with the 9" barrel?

7. Once approved. Can I engraved my info on the barrel? Or does my info have to go on the receiver?

Hopefully a few more will followed after this first approved Form 1. Here's pic of the receiver !

Here's how I did mine, e-filed individual, took nine days to approve. I'm not an expert but it worked for me.

1 - Yes

2 - Destructive Device

3 - 40mm

4 - M203 - I would omit the space

5 - Again I'd omit the space, I don't believe that's part of the serial number

6 - 9"

7 - If I recall the engraving can go on the barrel or receiver. I chose the top of the barrel

@bmmc

You're awesome! Thank you so much!

I do have one question. What's the OAL with the 9" barrel; it's the second part of question 6 on my og post?

Uhhhh, I'll have to find the form and check but I think I just looked it up at 12"

I have a 12" barrel and the Overall length is 15"

ETA- I engraved the top side of the receiver

I have a LMT.

12 inch barrel, OAL 15 inch.

Model "M203"  No space.

Good luck, and it is a horribly fun gun to shoot.

Edit:  Destructive Device.

Pick up a back issue of Impact: Journal of Tactical Ammunition to get the lowdown on ammo choices for the 40mm.

The author may be a raving asshole, but knows his 40mm.

How did you submit the Form 1? My e-file individual form 1 came back in 9 days, sent the fingerprints priority... I thought I'd made a mistake when received the email so fast.

I've thought about going this route for my M4 clone.  Talk to me about shooting the 40mm.  Are you just using chalk rounds, or are there other fun options that aren't too expensive per round?  Where did you source the colt receivers for the grenade launcher?  Currently, I only find LMT receivers in the military configuration?  How much are the Colt versions?

Yup I'm just gonna shoot cheetos out of it. I got the receiver from Arms Unlimited for $1,400 and after the stamp came back I got the barrel from TXMGO.

Here's mine (Colt M 203 with a 12 in bbl)

The person shooting it is a retired ST6 vet who was showing us the ropes at a carbine class last month.

Wasn't even using the ladder sights - just KY windage.

Very nice!

Please tell us about your Aimpoint mount...
What make/model is it?

What are the functions of that large elevation dial? Is it only setup to work with a specific trajectory arc?

It’s a LaRue that was made in limited numbers. I bought it off a surplus dealer who got it in a large lot of surplus. The knob is a range setting and it goes from 50-250 in 50yd increments. It was intended for use with chalk/hedp on a 6 shot m32 but the ballistics should be similar from any low pressure 40 mm

About $40 per HE round plus tax stamp. Other ammo is significantly more expensive or cheaper.

Last time I made a large purchase I bought a semi truck load of ammo- literally filled a one car garage.

My reaction on 012020 when I put the video, the picture, and the screenname together...

Pic thread: Unfortunately can't add to it. Hopefully in 2021. I got the big 3 taken care of (NV, Armor, Suppressors). Planned to do a standalone 203 as I have no good way to mount it to my go to rifle which is an SR15 Carbine Mod 2

Edit: If it was actually obtainable to us, I wouldn't hesitate getting a half dozen HE at $40+$200 (and building a magazine). I had no idea it was that cheap.

Hahaha that was me this morning when it clicked

As for your 203 mounting solution, you can attach 2 pica sections to your URX4 MLOK slots and use a pica mounted LMT M203

I was just going by the assumption that that wouldn't be strong enough? I have no doubt the URX4 rail is probably strong enough, but would the MLOK rail sections actually take the force of firing?

@trapsh00ter99 do you have the video link by chance? Would love to see it.

Also, KAC has a full length Keymod Picatinny Rail section that spans the entire length of the handguard..

IM sent

Unfortunately mine is the Mlok version, and I don't see a rail section for that on their website. I guess I will either send KAC an email or post in the industry forum asking about the viability of mounting a 203 on a Mod 2. Standalone isn't a bad option however.

Fab Defense FD-203

https://www.fab-defense.com/en/category-parts-and-upgrades/id-57/m203-standalone-conversion-kit.html

The stock is available in either L or S length. Mine is L, and the S is pictured at the above link. I'd avoid S unless you're a really small guy wearing body armor. The L is still almost too short for my 6'2" self with a plate carrier. I ordered from their distributor in FL.

It doesn't include the forward mounting screws for whatever reason, but Ace Hardware had them (yes I brought it inside ).

I like it because it's lighter and more compact than the LMT conversion, but the LMT does feel slightly more solid with its aluminum construction.

One nice thing about the LMT is the launcher can QD using the KAC bracket, and immediately be attached to an M4. The FD-203 requires disassembly (to include swapping the back plate on the receiver).

Want 40mm.

I cannot continue in good conscience to sit through movies / tv shows and criticizing the plot “have they never heard of belt fed and Indirect fire?!?” if I fail to have both in my set of tools.
