As the title says, looking for the safest rounds for this piece.

All matching, no pitting, pristine bore, other than some minor surface rust, looks to be in good shape.

Rifle has been the current owners family since end of WW1.

Ammo choices on hand are: 150gr Romy

178gr Czech

198gr Yugo

198gr Privi

As always, thanks to the hive for any and all input.

200 grain Speer bullet, 44.0 grains of IMR 4064, Winchester case, CCI large rifle primer.

Being a 29" barrel it will like 150 gr bullets better. Original ammo is a 154gr flat base spitzer at around 2900 fps and most surplus Turkish is WW1 spec and shoots well out of long barrel Mausers.

It is safe to shoot any commercial, Most US made 8mm is loaded very soft because of GEW88 rifles.

Prvi-Partisan and Sellior & Belliot are loaded to full power.

Unless you make your own, I think the safest will be the American-made brands.  They tend to be more lightly loaded than the European brands, and far more consistent than milsurp.

Do the GEW98's need to be babied?

No. Unless something bad happened to it, the rifle is just as capable now as the day it was manufactured.

As stated above, U.S. commercial loads are typically weak. Full-power loads would be fine though.

98 action. It will take anything you put in it. I have one that is a bring back. I have some 196 grain ball that is very accurate.

Out of curiosity does it have the unit stamped on the stock disc.  Mine came back with it intact.

181st Royal Saxon Infantry Regiment, Company 6, 4th rifle on the rack.

If you could trace the Company records you could find out who was issued the rifle
