Figured I would make a quick post, because it was something I was concerned with when I first was shopping. I am currently doing load development for my 17. This was from the first day working on loads. The rifle has less than 150 rounds through it, so it's pretty fresh.

Setup-
SCAR 17
Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x32
Harris BRM-S

Loads-
Barnes Match Brass
IMR 4064
Remington 9 1/2 Primers
175gr Sierra Match King BTHP
[email protected]"
[email protected]"

Loads from 40.0gr all the way up to 44.0gr in 0.5gr increments.

Overall, I know the rifle has much more in it. I have had it at 0.592" with a 3 shot group previously, so I am sure these will get worked out.

I load the same combination powder and bullet but not where I can get the load weight right now.  How do the cases look?  Any pressure signs?  I had to back off some but don't remember what weight was showing signs.  I was running 147s for the 17 but good to know it does good with 175s.  Thats what I load for some bolt guns.

No pressure signs at all from my 1st inspection, will be checking further later. However I did notice a weird knick on every neck.

My scar 17 does better with 150 to 168 gran bullets.  I think 175 is a bit too heavy for a 16inch barrel.  175's I think like more velocity than you can safely get with a shorter barrel.   My 20" 308s run great with 175 grain bullets.

Anyway, just my opinion.

You are correct, I may have to try lighter rounds. I usually try out 175s first, because 168s usually tumble for me past 800m.

I always assumed it came from the barrel extension as the empty case was being extracted from the chamber and ejected.

Mine nicks my brass too I’ve noticed. I do wonder what results you’d get if you tried 168 SMKs, I’d bet you’d be able to get it a hair tighter but obviously you’d cut a bit off your range.

Give 155palma match bullets a try. The scarH really likes lighter longer bullets. Twist rate and barrel length limit your velocity/bullet weight choices.

I to have found the 168's get funky past 750-800meters. The 175SMK's are good to 1K but have pressure issues in semi-auto rifles.

I noticed my SCAR smashes or deforms the tips of the bullets when they are loaded into the chamber:

Anyone else notice this?
This can drastically affect accuracy.

Doesn't seem to be a factor with FMJ ammo but when I load hunting rounds in mine the soft points sometimes get slightly damaged from chambering....doesn't happen every time. What does usually happen is the rounds in the magazine will get their spire point blunted a bit from the firing and recoil which I've found to be typical of most magazine fed hi power rifles.

Accuracy wise both my SCARs seem to really like 150gr bullets. I've not tried them with anything higher yet but one day will sit down and actually try and get a true load built up for them. With factory 150gr cheap Federal hunting ammo I get roughly 3/4" groups at 100 yards, with some older handloads I have for another rifle I get well under 1/2".

Shorter than max mag length, don't recall the exact length at the moment.

Yep happens in the mag, not while chambering. I had that issue with 155g A-Max.

Have you tried to get a baseline with 168 GMM?

I can consistently hold .8-1.2MOA with 168gr.  When I up the load to a 175gr the rifle will open up and shoot about 1.5-2MOA groups.
That is using Black Hills, PPU, or FGMM ammo.

here is where I have been with mine, I just don't get many opportunities to shoot at long distances so no new information to report for a while

I have shot USGI M118LR out of my Surefire suppressed, 13" barreled SCAR-H out to 750 meters.  I found that the rifle will hold ~1.5 MOA or better out to ~600-650 meters with that cartridge.  Past that, it became much more unpredictable as the bullet goes trans-sonic.
